We like to see accuracy with velocity---the kids who have great velocity from the outfield are usually overthrowing with lack of accuracy--the true test is in games with the runner going for the extra base

Most times we find the kid with better than but not great velocity being more accurate in a game--

I don't actually have figures for this type of throw but the better Freshmen pitchers are 70-75 from the mound, so my guess would be similar velocities +/- a little.

I do know that our Varsity CF who is going to a major D1 (rated top 16 in the country) throws 81-82 off the mound. To TR's point he is very very accurate and I his ball seems to sail well and he can throw runners out at home quite easily because he is spot on with his throws.

We have game this evening and for kicks I will try to get some outfield readings if I get there early enough for the pre-game.

My reason for the comment is that at low 80's for a freshmen he must have what seems like a cannon arm compared to other's.

That would be great if you could.

And yes-he has a cannon. He has, according to the coaches, the best arm out of the fr and jv team. He has played ONLY the OF (specifically CF) since he was 7-and he is 16 now (this of course is part of it-he is a year older because he was held back in 2nd grade). But it is still a good sign because they do have, and had have, a good bb program. And they now are trying to "make" him into a pitcher and a catcher as well as an OF'r. I wish the coaches would leave him alone because he is phenomenal in the OF.

Probably where it all got started was when I read him the article I found here many years ago. The question was "Why don't most kids make the hs team" and the answer was "arm strength". So he made sure it wasn't going to be that LOL. And yes his throws are accurate.

I posted this in the hitting section too with no replies-what about bat speed? How is 83mph compared to other high school players?

I hear you and I realize that pitchers are recruited more but forgive me for being stupid-I just don't understand why. A GREAT of'r can be in every inning of every game whereas a pitcher is either on a rotation or might come in 1 inning.

We sit there and watch college bb games and are just in amazement. Example is the Georgia vs Clemson game the other night. The RF'r cost Clemson the game.
