Congrats to Panther Dad and his boy's success in his first college game!! I thought it would neat to put a little twist on the subject. Does anyone have any funny Freshman firsts? I think mine will qualify:
My oldest son is a LHP and about 5 or 6 games into the season he was called on to pitch an inning late in a non-conference game. He ran out to the mound and of course mom and dad were just beaming. He toed the rubber and then he stepped off. He toed the rubber again and had a puzzled look on his face and stepped off. He did this a couple more times and then he waived the catcher (a senior) out to the mound. They had a little conversation and the catcher started laughing and ran back to home plate. Michael turned and started warming up from the stretch. When we asked him later what happened he said he was so nervous up there on the mound for the first time that he forgot which foot to start his wind-up with!!

My oldest son was a freshman pitcher in 2001. Late one week night, he was summoned to the field to "roll out the tarp". As it turned out, he and another freshman were tied together (naked) and filmed singing the school fight song ---- a video that still pops up now and then around the campus (at inopportune times from his perspective). Smile

His career was not spectacular....but as he wraps it up this season, I'm very thankful for his baseball "fraternity" and the experiences he has had playing in college. He is a great kid and, although his stats will not be reflected in any record books, his 4-time Academic All-Conference honors will always be special to his family. We love you, son.

Picture this...1985, I'm a freshman at North Carolina Wesleyan. I was in awe of all the talent on the team, and pleased to be part of it. A senior outfielder (returning All-American) took me under his wing. He asked in return that I do what he told me (on the field), and never to question it. We were playing Wake Forest at our place in late March and it was about 40 degrees. In the bottom of the 5th, the senior asked me to keep my eyes on him. If he put his arm up, he was really cold, and needed me to run his coat out to him. Top 1/2 of the seventh, lead-off hitter flies out to LF. I heard my name yelled, I looked up, and his hand was in the air. I tore out of the dugout so that I could get his coat to him before the next hitter. As I entered the IF, everyone started laughing. I tood about 3 more steps, then turned around and went back to the dugout. Only problem was every one was in on it, but our head coach. Did I pay a price for that one!
