HS game, first inning, the batter hits a ball that carries out to the 4-foot-tall fence that's about 380ft from the plate.  BU thought it bounced over, groundrule double.  CF comes running in and says it cleared the fence.

How should this be handled?

Wow, that's one honest CF you got there.....not sure that his honestly will be rewarded once he gets to his own dugout, but ....

this is a sticky situation......so let's lay this out....

  • The call from a GR double to HR is a call that can be changed.
  • NFHS has an official interpretation 544-543 from Rumble: that an umpire who becomes convinced that his call may have been in error may, until a pitch or a play, reverse his call...

But that change would have to come from the calling umpire, (in this case the BU), from additional information he acquired only from his partner in conference.

If other responsibilities has kept his partner from offering any differing advice, then the original call should stand despite the honest CF comment.
