North senior Matt Lackie (on his 18th birthday) beat McKinney sophomore Zach Lee with a one-hitter.

Lackie hit his usual 88-92 MPH but North coach Jim Gatewood said keeping his pitch count to 84 going into what would be a 1-2-3 seventh was the key... McKinney thought Lackie's up-and-down locations kept them off balance.

McKinney senior C Andy Lalumandier broke the no-no with a solid fifth inning single.. "Waist high fastball," Lackie said.

Lackie was effectively wild.. 10Ks, 3 HPB, 1 walk, five baserunners

In the sixth, Lalumandier it a drive to the fence in right that Nico Taylor (with a little adventure) brought in .. Arizona signee Taylor is improving quickly at right after having played some but a lot of first too.

Lee was strong and North scored with the help of two errors (rate ***** miscue on routine play)

"It was the first time I'd seen Lee," North coach Jim Gatewood said. "He's everything I'd heard."

Bean Where,

This game proves my point about North. They give up 14 runs, have 5 errors? How many quality teams will that beat. You would have loved this game, it looked like a couple of freshman 2A teams going at it. North was warming up the starting pitcher in the 6th and 7th inning and he couldn't even get out of the 3rd! I love it, re-enter the starter that was pulled in the 3rd.

OP & Ben,
For Boyd it is all about MAKING the playoffs. For MHS and North it is about how far can you go. OP, if you happen to lose a flip, how are you feeling about a 3 game series against a real playoff caliber team?

I was told that flipping for one game series has been eliminated. Both teams have to agree on a one game series. This is unconfirmed but from a pretty reliable source.

Fetch it - the directional school will not go very far in 3 game playoffs. District is another matter.

Kirk,

I have had several conversations with our coach about the luck of the flip, as we are one who would like a 3 game series. He has never mentioned this new rule, I really think it would have come up if it were true.

That is why I put UNCONFIRMED, I am not 100% positive this rule has changed.

I thought you were in south central Texas? Are you home or passing the time with your relatives by posting on the HS baseball web?
We've played 4 district games, with 10 more to go. Let's don't get too far ahead of ourself. Before we worry about our playoff chances, we need to make the playoffs first. Then we can worry about any coin flips.

I got this off the UIL web site:

"Playoff format is determined by mutual consent or coin-flip".

Not sure exactly what that means, but that's all I could find regarding what Kirk said.

Bring It,

Give me a break, you have NEVER seen a pitcher have a off day? I think the starting pitcher's stats are not bad for a sophomore & it's not like he was getting killed out there.

Five errors? sounds like the pitcher was not the only one that had a bad day
I have to agree with Bring it, high scoreing games with multiple errors does not equal a good game, IMO.

Your right it was not a fun game to watch.
Back to the one game playoff... when we had Miller we were looking for the same thing. The rule then (2003) was that both coaches had to agree on one game. Obviously no one wanted to play us in a one-gamer so then we flipped to decide on field location, etc. As far as I know, that rule hasn't changed. Maybe that'll offer a little perspective.
