In the Club vs High School baseball thread, it was brought up about how the 4PM starts make it hard for parents and others to make it to games.

The issue for many schools is the lack of lights as well as for many parts of the country the cold weather would make it a bad decision.

So what do you guys think? What would be the good things and what about the problems that would have to be worked out?

One solution that could work without any additional costs is schedule more Saturday games. High schools practice every Saturday anyway so why not schedule games instead. When my son played, they had only two Saturday games with one being played in a minor league stadium which was neat. County and State tournaments were played on Saturday's too. While I know many people work on Saturdays, there's also many more people off that might go to see the local high school games. It also addresses weather and lighting since they can start the games any time during the day.

Weekday games at 4:00PM draw very few people and the few that show up are the ones who can make it that time. It would be good if parents could see more games since the season is so short to begin with.

So you get more fans there... does that necessarily help the school program? I don't know about other parts of the country, but I can only remember admission being charged for high school baseball is at a minor league park and during the regionals/sectionals.

My high school plays doubleheaders most Saturdays during the season. I know one conference in Illinois that plays its conference games on Saturdays.

Just some thoughts..
No. getting more fans won't help the baseball program financially since they don't charge admission like football. All baseball funds are directly from the parents thru the booster club, fundraising etc and of course, the checkbook.. For the County tournament finals, there is an admission of like only 2 or 3 bucks.

It's more about getting better attendance for baseball games.

I'd pay admission to watch a varsity high school game and if it helped raise money to add lighting and improvements, all the better. I had to pay admission to watch my son play in Waterfront Park in Trenton. Of course it included the Thunder game but I wasn't there for that.

I don't know if it had to do with the colder climate and later start in New England, but we played Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday in high school. The season didn't start until about April 10th. In PA my son's team starts a month earlier. They never play on Saturday. Once conference play starts there are only two games a week. They play three a week the first two weeks of the season. Only the post season might be played on Saturday.
