In the “Runner Disruptions” thread, OK Heat mad the following statement.

It occurred to me that keeping track of GW anything is not something I’ve ever done, and wondered if many people do. I’ve very seldom seen, or at least noticed GW stats anywhere but in the ML.

I seem to vaguely recall MLB keeping track of GWRBI for a few seasons, at least.

The way they set it up, it really wasn't usefull. As I recall, they used the same concept as determining a winning pitcher. If a batter drove in the run that put his team ahead for good, he got credit for the GWRBI.

A FC in the first to put a team up 1-0 in a game that ultimately went 17-16 (with the team scoring first never giving up the lead), would've credited the GWRBI to that batter in the first.

They dabbled with GWRBI from 7th inning on but I don't think they got anything usefull out of it.
Keith Hernandez used to dominate this stat with the mid 80's Mets teams. He'd knock in a run in the first inning of a 6-2 win and get the GWRBI. It was kind of fashionable for a few seasons but lost favor becasue as mentioned it really didn't mean anything.

It was also shortly after this time that the amount of information exploded and the Moneyball stats started to gain favor.
