What makes some coaches approachable and others not. Am i too naive that at 14 some nuturing needs to continue. As a first yr travel squad parent, I'm afraid to say somthing to the coach's for fear that it will reflect on my kid. Maybe i'm just stuck in the little league coach mentality. Or maybe since neither coach has kids of their own they lack the empathy for a kids feelings or his mindset.

One of the best coaches, if not THE best, my son ever had (was at age 15) did not communicate much at all with the parents. We had the clear idea that he was not interested.

Oh, he was cordial, but no more than "hi."

My son learned SOOOoooo much from him, and so did I (through my son). I think the guy made a huge impact on my son and I credit him immensely for where he ended up.

And now that he is not his coach, he's as friendly as can be. He even helped with the college search by giving advice on how to go about it.

Some coaches want separation and I don't really blame them for it. As long as your son is learning and being treated with respect, I wouldn't worry or care about it at all.
I think that not talking to parents about baseball or playing time is huge. I know most of us coaches aren't big fans of it. Sometimes parents vision are one dimensonal. On all my teams in the first meeting I tell the parents I won't discuss a word until the player himself has spoken to me and after that if the answer is not satisfying then all three or four of us will sit down and talk about it. I also do believe that communication is big between the player and the coach. Being so young I am know as a players coach but I am smart enough and my players know that there is a line that cannot be passed. Communication comes in different forms. Both virbal and physical. I try to communicate through both forms to get my points across. So far I have been lucky to only have 2 problems in the last 4 years in over a dozen different teams (same team name just different players).
