Main Entry: ge·net·ics
Pronunciation: \jə-ˈne-tiks\
Function: noun plural but singular in construction

A branch of biology that deals with the heredity and variation of organisms.

The fact that living things inherit traits from their parents.

The modern science of genetics seeks to understand the process of inheritance. It began with the work of Gregor Mendel in the mid-nineteenth century.

Although he did not know the physical basis for heredity, Mendel observed that organisms inherit traits in a discrete manner. The basic units of inheritance are now called genes.

Basically that statement means you can only do so much with what God gave you.

Usually it is directed to physical development...It can also be directed at mental capabilites......

But lets say its based on Baseball ability..

For example we may have very little chance of growing to 6'5" if both our parents are 5'5".....

Everyone gets certain traits from their parents....some may excel in math, music, sports or art and even though a person may have interests that lay in other areas the ability to do those at a high level may not be there.........there is truth in the statement that we are all limited by our genetics......

hope this helps....

That's not necessarily the correct way to look at it. It's about probability. If your parents were athletically gifted, you will have a better chance to be so, too. But it's not a 100% guarantee. If they were not, you will have a less chance. But that doesn't mean you have NO chance.

I would not say Michael Jordan has genetic limitations. The man is one of the greatest professional athletes of all time. It sounds as if you think he could have been even better with better genes?
Next -- Since you posted your question under the Pitching & Throwing category, let me add a thought about genetics and Pitching/Throwing.

Each of us has our own unique "genetic signature" ... the way we naturally throw a ball. This is the result of how our body (muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments, etc.) is designed, thanks to our unique personal genetics (thanks Mom & Dad).

You are likely to get the best results, and maintain the heathiest body, when you develop pitching/throwing mechanics that work with your natural arm path. Learning how to transfer the most power/force through the ball, using your natural delivery.

When you try to change your arm path from what is genetically optimum, you will invariably place stress on joints, tendons, ligaments, muscles, etc.; as they are being asked to move in a way that is not "natural." Over time, this can lead to inflamation, tears, breaking down of joints, and other not so good stuff. The impact will vary with each body.

Let's say your natural arm path is side-arm, or 3/4-arm. A coach tells you that to throw the ball hard you have to bring it from over the top, and works with you to change your arm path. More than likely, it will require thought and effort to throw over the top, and you will feel discomfort. That is because YOUR arm is not designed to go that way. Just like anything other machine, if you use it in a way it in not intended, over time, it will tend to break down.

At least this is what a very good sports orthopedic surgeon explained things to me before he overhauled my shoulder.

My advice ... based on personal experience, lots of research, and training many young pitchers who have remained injury free; build your mechanics around your natural throwing motion. The moment you begin to change your "genetic signature" you are going to reduce effectiveness, and increase the risk of injury.

No not at all, I'm saying his desire and determination overcame any possible genetic limitations he may have had (As in his dad wasn't in the class of athlete that Mike was and neither was his mother). I don't think MJ could have been better...whats better than best?
No my real point is that genetics may have some factor..but that the human will and spirit are factors that trump...or Hitler would have watched his master race out run Jesse Owens..instead of the other way around.
I've always contended that we have a genetic blueprint that determines the upper limits of the finished product.

We can't (without assistance) exceed the upper limit of that blueprint range.

We can, however, easily cheat ourselves and fall short of those limits. I've always expected my children to eat and sleep as close to "right" as possible and to doggedly pursue their goals.

There will always be others with more talent. But, there should be no one who works harder.

MJ's athletic ability was off the charts...but he was still the hardest working individual. And, he demanded it of his teammates as well.
