In the 2000 election, he said he realized that his days as a pitcher were numbered when he was warming up in the bullpen as a freshman, and the coach had gone through all the other relievers. The coach walked to the mound, lifted the pitcher, and waved in the right fielder to take over. Smile

I also liked Al Gore's freshman hoops teammate from Harvard, who offered: "Al played guard. You know how a really great guard can push the ball up the floor with the dribble, and still have his eyes focused up the court and see everything developing in front of him?.... Well, Al couldn't do that."
Bush did play baseball in college. As an ex-athlete and ballplayer, it's no surprise Bush can make good throws from home plate. The good athletes never lose that uncanny ability to do things athletically better than most even years after they put the ball down. My dad was one of these athletes so I know very well.

Go do some youtube searches on O'bamas first pitches..They're hilarious.

My kids no longer need me as their catcher as of the last couple of years.

When I shag fouls, I'm frequently finding that rolling the ball to the dugout is much better than "tossing" the ball over the backstop. I was a pitcher throuh HS, but now in my mid-40's I can't seem to throw at all as I don't have reason to throw / catch often.

It's amazing how quickly these skills went away.

This is why when a president (present or former)walks out to the mound in a jacket and throws a strike, or at least gets it there in the air, I'm impressed.

When my father-in-law was sixty he hit seventy-five on the radar gun at Cooperstown. At seventy-nine my son said he still brought it at a reasonable BP speed last summer.

Personally, I throw just as hard as I did in college. The ball just arrives a lot later now.
