Summer 2007
Beginning in the summer of 2007, the GHSA will mandate that all high school athletic teams observe a "Dead Week". Every summer, from the Sunday before July 4th through the next Saturday, teams may not be involved with practices, conditioning workouts, weight training, going to camp, or playing in competitions. For 2007, the "Dead Week" begins on July 1 and ends on July 7th.

Yes, in most areas. In Kentucky we have a dead period as well. For baseball it's during the first or second week of July. That's so the kids can either go on vacation, spend time with another sport, or take time off. We all know that does't happen. Most kids that are dedicated baseball players are on a team away from the HS coach or the HS coah has someone coaching in his place.

How does it affect a kid playing on travel team?

I think any HS coach who would not want his players taking advantage playing against the best competition is not doing his job as a coach and mentor. It's a win-win situation. The kid who goes to the travel team gets better and his replacement on the summer team gets more reps. In the end the HS team is stronger.

At the same time I don't like the idea of HS coaches coaching the summer team because every player needs a little variety and break in order to keep things from becomming too redundant, and different coaching styles can teach a player a different techniques and approaches to the game.
I'm not sure about other programs in our summer league, but the HS Varsity summer program is viewed as optional as long as the kid is playing somewhere. Kids who play Legion or other travel teams are not required to play HS summer ball, although the coaches like them to play on days where the schedules don't conflict.

In my particular situation, I think I would like the kids to play for a different coach during the summer because I think too much preception from summer ball can carryover to the HS season. Meaning that I don't know that kids are viewed in an objective light once HS tryouts start based on summer season.
I think RZ hit the nail on the head on why its good for a HS player to play for a different coach. What you do in the summer should have no bearing on the HS season. At this age kids can change so quickly its ridiculous. Its all about playing more in the off season and getting reps and experience. Getting to play for a different coach can be very good for kids. And the HS coach needs a break as well. I spend the summer working on the facility and watching my players play. I used to coach alot but it left me coaching some of my players and not getting to see my other players play. Plus we run a strength and conditioning program five days a week for three hours a day so it can be a grind. RZ's post was right on in every way imo.
To clairfy a couple of earlier questions:
School in Georgia ends at the end of May. The baseball season for schools that don't make the playoffs will end in early May. Between the end of the season and the start of the summer program, teams are not allowed to practice. At the start of June, high schools can practice and play in summer leagues, coached by the high school coaches. That "summer league" ends at the end of June.

So this "dead period" is not directed at baseball. It is directed at football, where weightlifting and passing leagues occur all throughout June and July, until fall practice starts at the beginning of August.
In Tennessee the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) instituted a two (2) week "DEAD PERIOD" about four years ago. They take off the week before July 4th and the week after. If the high school has their own summer league team & it is coached by the high school coaches the team has two choices.
1. No playing or practice during the dead period
2. Find a parent or former player to coach the team during the dead period.
All indoor facilities (weightroom, basketball courts, swimming pools, etc...) are to remain closed during the dead period. School teams are not allowed to attend any type of camps together and the school may not host any type of athletic camps during the dead period.

The rule was put in place to give athletes (football & basketball players) and their families the opportunity to go on family vacations.

The rule has nothing to do with Summer Baseball Leagues or their teams as long as they are not a school team.

The new item on the TSSAA's agenda is what they are calling the 50% rule. No baseball, basketball, etc... Out of high school season teams in any sport may not have more than 50% (baseball would be 4) of the playes from the same high school. They are looking into this because some high school coaches are forcing the kids to play for the high school summer league team instead of a select team.

This item has alot of political movers & shakers behind it because the local pony, little league, babe ruth, etc... leagues are loosing players in the upper age groups because they are being forced to play for the high school team. This is turn is costing the leagues money and several leagues have been forced to close the doors which in turn hurts the young 6-12 year old players.
