Periodically, a thread will concern how to either get kids interested in baseball, or keep them interested in baseball. Sometimes there are talks of marketing programs by MLB, etc.

Yet, perhaps it comes down to one kid at a time.

Texan Son was throwing his bullpen tonight at a local field. As he is warming up, a 10YO boy rides up on his bike and starts watching.

Texan Son speaks to him for a minute or two. Finishes warming up & starts into the bullpen. After a while, I see the boy go to his backpack. He pulls out a glove and ball, holding them while he continues to watch. When one of those 85 mph fastballs pops in, his eyes get a little big.

At a break along the way, I play a little catch with the boy.

At another break, Texan Son teaches the boy how to use glove signals to let the catcher know what pitch is coming during warmups. He goes over it until the boy has it down.

After Texan Son is done, I move the bucket up to 46' and ask the boy if he would like to throw a few pitches to me. Texan Son teaches the boy the basic footwork of the windup. The boy listens attentively and does very well applying what he has been taught. He also picks up quickly on the two seam and four seam grip.

Obviously, no one had ever worked with the boy, even though he plays LL ball. He was just trying to mimic what he had seen on television.

We gave him a good baseball to keep when he left. He thanked us most politely. As he rode off on the bike, he looked back at Texan Son with a little awe in his eyes and a smile on his face.

One "big player" spending a few minutes with a little guy may play a small part in keep the little guy going in baseball. Perhaps the best way to keep the love of the game going is one kid at a time...

I agree with you spizzlepop, 2 great post's.

I was fortunate enough to have a younger brother still playing HS ball, when my son was born.
So for little guy's to be hanging and getting high five's from the Big guys is Priceless.

One time went to watch the LL District championship.
Started a little BP on the field next to the game with my young son.
Within 10 minutes we had a full field of kids of all sizes.
Playing work-up and there was just as many people watching or game as there were watching the championship game.
Thanks for the great post!! Your son made a great impression on a young player that will be remembered for a long time. Your son and his young admirer is a very good example of how athletes pass on the passion of the game. It also proves there is one answer to a recent question on the HSBBW ---- "Who made athletes role models?" Wink

My son was about 7 when we moved to Georgia. He never played any baseball. Had a next door neighbor who encouraged us to sign up for fall ball so we did….many of these kids had been playing for several years and I didn’t realize how good they were at such a young age. So I take my son out back and I’m throwing to him underhand and he is doing his best to catch the ball with his $9.99 special K-Mart glove.

Later the boy next door comes over (4 years older) and they play catch. I couldn’t watch it….It was basically catch this or DIE!

My son has loved and excelled in baseball because of that boy next door – who by the way is having a nice year at a D3. If it weren’t for the kid next door I can’t imagine how different things would be. They played so much baseball together my only regret is that because of the age difference they have never been on a team together.

Texan Son has always been good with younger kids. When he was 10YO, I remember him teaching a teammate's 3YO brother how to be a catcher. It as a blast watching the little fellow drag around a catcher's mitt, and put on that catcher's mask that almost swallowed him, then get down in the crouch...

Don't know if we will ever run into the young pitcher again, but I hope so. Wish he had someone working with him on a regular basis, as he obviously has the desire.
