Huge, huge, huge colonial district showdown Tuesday night at 7:00. Deep Run vs. Godwin for an early lead in the district.

Assuming it'll be Brooks/Boyle vs. Lees/Garrett.

Interesting, Deep Run has played 2 (was supposed to be 3) while this will be Godwin's first since losing to JR. Opinions on if this matters.

Who ya got? What ya got?

Godwin's website says Carson Stephens will start for the Eagles. I'm a little surprised, but of course I don't have all the details on how these decisions are made. Stephens did apparently throw four strong innings in relief against James River.

I just know that Lees has pitched the majority of their big games for the past three seasons, and now he's not starting against Deep Run and came in late in relief against James River. I'm not sure what's going on, but I know Godwin typically starts a little slowly but they're always right there in late May. Maybe they just spend the first few weeks sorting some things out before hitting their stride?
Deep Run at Godwin.

I wonder if this means that they will basically use Garrett and Stephens as their primary starters, with Lees always available in relief? I don't dislike that idea, and they have enough games with lesser opponents (TJ, JM, MWGS) to make it work during the regular season. But I just wonder if there is more to the story. Like I said, Lees has been their horse for his whole high school career. It seems weird that they're now using him out of the bullpen regularly.

To a lot of guys, the closer role is every bit as important as the starter role. So this is not necessarily to be viewed as a step downward for Lees. It just reflects how their coach put together his pieces of his particular puzzle.

That being said, there was a marked difference in performance in the James River game between Garrett and Stephens. Had Stephens started, the game might have been a different story. It's a lot easier for a kid getting his first start (Scheetz) to relax and pitch when his team has 6 runs before he starts the first inning. I don't know if Garrett was just having an off day, or if maybe he's going to be the # 2 guy all season.
Good point....Lees is their centerfielder. Also, just to clarify, I didn't mean to imply that having Lees in relief was a step down, but from my recollection of Godwin teams in the past, they've never used a similar strategy before. Maybe they're just using the talent they have the best they can or just trying something new. Or maybe it's nothing and Lees will be starting as the season goes on. I was just noting that it's interesting.
