Before I ask parents for athletic training I wanted to show some initiative and condition myself. Just wanted to know what sort of running (long distances or sprints..and how much of each) would be most beneficial to maximize my potential as a pitcher and give me a shot of being the walk-on that makes it through fall practice

Contact the coach you plan on walking on for and get their summer strength and conditioning manual. It should have everything you need. It will show him that you are serious and get you started in the way they want you working out.

Other than that you will have to spend some of your time and money putting together a program. Do a search on the S&C forum on pitcher workouts, look though them. Get the TuffCuff manual, look at some of Jon Doyle's stuff. Find a local trainer who can help you. The information is out there but you are going to have to work to put it together.

Good Luck!
Wow, I didn't expect this many responses so early. Thank you all for the input.

I am going to walk onto Winthrop University's baseball team. Boydsworld.com has them rated among the top 100 programs in the country...has me nervous and excited that I am trying out for such a strong team. Know of two players on the team, both are products from NJ so if the coach doesn't give the manual I could always ask them for it

What are your high school accomplishments? Where have you been playing summer ball? What are your accomplishments? What's the max and cruise velocity on your fastball? What's your height and weight?

RJM,

summer ball- played 2 years of Legion and currently playing on a town 18u team..just trying to get innings and see if I can get my arm into shape..or see that it has nothing left in it

accomplishment - won a Junior Legion County Tournament MVP my sophomore year. Was out Junior year with an internal impingement (required surgery) and was not ready to play until late into senior year.

max and cruise velocity - with the SLAP tear fastball - 71mph
changeup - 60mph
curveball - 60mph

when I was healthy
fastball - 77-79mph maxing 80mph
changeup - 65mph
curveball - 65mph

Height and weight- 5'8 and 155lbs

Ole Ball Coach- I do feel that I am making progress. Still get discomfort occasionally. Still getting discomfort might put some baseball people off, and it annoys me to no end but, after the amount of pain I felt pitching with the SLAP tear

TRhit- I got 8innings this year. 4 of those were scoreless innings against a perennial county power, but I have barely any HS experience.

I know the cards are stacked against me, but I'm not going to let that stop my pursuit of playing
I have seen too many players beat the odds and play when "experts" said they couldn't so I wish you luck. Stay strong. With that said, I would think that your velocity will be the first thing the Winthrop (or any coach, really) will look at. Keep that in mind.

Also, Winthrop is a very strong program, so the "pool" of pitchers will likely be pretty big. For you, is it Winthrop or nothing?

Also, how are your grades?

Well Coach I picked Winthrop just based off of my liking of the University, and the fact that it has a baseball team is a plus. If I get cut and I still like the school then I will stay and tryout again.

Winthrop baseball is not an all or nothing, lucky for me if I decide to leave and try-out for another college I live right by D3 powerhouse Kean University and I am well known, and liked by the pitching coach, by one of the D1 programs as well.

Grades are good, graduated with a 3.3.

Very cool man!

I am going to be heading to Washington State this year for college. I am going to be a walk-on. I have been working really really hard too. But it seems like with a slap tear you have been stacked further against than I have. Like you I will be attending for academics and the baseball is an extra. But I am in a serious desire mode to make the team there! I have been told by coaches and scouts that I can start at a JC, but I really want to shoot above and push myself. I hope for a redshirt slot or just a bench spot. The reason being is that with a chance given to me I know for 100% sure that I will become a dominant force, but I just need the time at that level.

I am a 1B/DH i am 6'4" 220lbs, I have been 2 time all-conference 1B (high school) and 1 time all-state 1B (Legion). This is all from Eagle River, Alaska (suburb of anchorage).

I have been in good contact with the recruiting coordinator and all. I am about to send him a new video of some onfield BP and fielding and running.

To ad if anyone here on the board has a connection to the coaching staff at wazzu, I am all ears, it would be very much appreciated. If anyone would like to see video, please let me know. Any feedback or anything, I am all ears!

I bid you the best of luck my friend, please keep me updated I really want to hear great things!
