There is a thread in Pre-HS about bad coach moments. How about some good coach moments?
I'll start with a couple.
When 2B was 10, playing on the 11-12 all-star team, he was a helmet thrower and occasional bat thrower. Previous coaches would not sit him even though I asked them to. First all-star practice, 2B gets frustrated about something and doesn't really throw his helmet, but kind of flips it. Coach sat him for the rest of the practice. No yelling, very quiet and calm. It nearly killed 2B. But it sure did work. 2B had been left off the all-star team the year before because of his attitude. I learned later that this coach had fought to have him on the team that year - he said "I can help him." And he sure did.
The next one was last spring, playing with mostly older players at the first summer tournament. There was a flare to right center, and 2B probably could have dove and had it, but pulled up, deferring to the older players. Naturally the ball dropped in. After the game, the coach, again with no yelling, said, "next time, you go get that ball." And he's been going and getting them ever since.
Thanks, coaches!
