I was thinking about our experiences last year at the PG National Underclass and I remembered getting some advice form fellow HSBWW posters on what to look for to have a good experience at our first showcase. In an attempt to “pay it forward” I hope you will indulge me in my attempt to share a few things that I observed last year as you head off to Florida.

Never forget, you are being watched...

I. Always play hard! Hustle, run everything out and always make the extra effort. I believe that the folks evaluating the players pay as much attention on how you go about your business as much as if you go 2 for 3 in the game. What kind of non verbal messages to you want to give them?

2. Look like a ball player. This is not the time to debut your own personal style. You want to stick out because of your great play not the way you look. Shirts tucked in, hats on straight and if you’re going to strut, do it back to the car after a great performance. (I truly have turned into my dad Smile)

3. Never let them see you sweat; show that you can handle the mental side of the game, especially if things don’t go your way. I have heard more people tell my son that they really like his mound presence and how he handled a tough situation. This tells me that they are watching your “makeup” as well as how hard you can throw the ball or if you can knock it to the gaps.

4. Colleges know what happens in Ft. Myers. While there may not many schools in attendance, don't think they don't have eyes in the stands. You will see many high level travel team coaches in attendance. Not only are they looking for players that might fit into their teams, I believe they also provide feedback on players they like to some of the schools they work with. Also don’t forget, the ultimate college link is PG itself, if you show you’ve got skills the schools will know about it.

5. How do I stack up? This may be your first time seeing how big the baseball pool really is. The best part about our trip was finding out where my son fit into the underclass baseball landscape. Hopefully you will leave feeling good about where you stack up as well as finding out what you need to work on to become better.

6. This ones for all of us Mom and Dad’s out there. Try not to live and die with every swing, catch or pitch at the showcase. Don't read too much into how you think your son has done. I know from personal experience that sometimes when you aren’t sure they are at their best, (my son had what I thought was a so-so outing last year) the people evaluating the talent can see what they are looking for. The one thing I learned about a showcase format is that there is a different set of rules that don’t necessarily get measured by who wins or loses a game.

7. Most importantly, have a good time. It’s December, you’re in Florida and you’re getting to watch some really good baseball. What could be any better!

These are not necessarily original thoughts, just ones that might fit the occasion. Good luck to every HSWBB member going to Ft. Myers, I can’t wait to hear about your experiences when you return.

I wish we could be there with you.

PG has already posted some info. As usual, a well run event. My son (08) was there for the second time. He was pleased with his overall performance, named to Top Prospect teams for a second time. Would have liked to have done better on his 60 time.

I really liked Jerseydad's pointers. Here are some of my observations from the event:
1. Hustle- I saw several players NOT hustling and unfortunately they stuck out like a sore thumb.
2. Look the part- Overall, pretty good in this area. However, I saw half a dozen players wearing their caps "offset", off center...NOT good.
3. "Sweat"- We were at a showcase this summer where a kid threw a temper tantrum...kicked out of the showcase! From what I saw everyone did a great job in this area.
4. Eyes in the stands- While I am confident that they were many other high profile travel programs there, Midland and East Cobb coaches/scouts were very visible.
5. Stacking up- This is one of the main reasons my son has attended PG events. In the end, he felt he stacked up pretty well.
6. This year I TRIED to spend more time watching other players. I saw some GREAT players out there: JP Ramirez, Tyler Pastornicky, and Eric Hosmer to name a few.
7. WE HAD A GREAT TIME!

Thanks again, jerseydad for your insights!!!!
Also, note that Baseball Buzz's son stole the show this weekend.

Buzz, Jr. was a catcher for the Youth National Team last August. Came back from Venezuela with a nasty case of food poisoning, but went to a scheduled PG showcase anyway despite being weak and down quite a few pounds. He got ranked recently, but based on that showcase, and thus not as strongly as you might have expected from a Team USA guy.

Well, Buzz, Jr. shows up in Ft. Myers and makes the conversion to PITCHER. After warming up in the 86-89 range, his first game action pitch comes in at 91! Over three innings, he ultimately peaked at 92, had several 90-91 readings, and even got to 88-89 with a cutter!

I suspect his newfound position preference will see him move up quite a bit when the post-PGUS re-rankings come out!
Midlo, Thank you for your kind words. Jr. had a great time in Ft. Myers. Can't say enough about the quality of the showcase, how well it was run . . . and of course about the weather! He got a lot of questions answered and learned a great deal about what he needs to work on next.

Catching up with Midlo Jr. again was an added bonus. It was pure pleasure watching him throw (93!) on Saturday. For those of you who haven't had the pleasure of seeing him pitch, he is awesome - polished and totally in command on the mound. And on top of all that (and more importantly) a thoroughly delightful young man to be around. You and Mrs. Midlo should be very proud!
JerseyDad it was a great event. The weather was great and the talent was outstanding. And as usual PG did an outstanding job running the event. Outside of the fact Jeff came down with a nasty stomach virus the night we got down there we had a great time. Jeff played on the same Top Prospect Team with MidloDad's son and there was some serious talent on that field on both teams. Let me just add a little about Mac Williamson. Jeff played with Mac on the same travel team when they were 14. Mac is a fine young man. So respectfull and humble and this success could not happen to a better and more deserving young man. He was outstanding at the event and Im sure his performance this past week will help him out alot. I was very impressed with the level of the play in all the games I watched. There were alot of very good pitchers and the defense was great. I hate that I did not get to meet any of the HSBBW family but Im sure I will in the future. I did get to spend some time talking with Mac's mom after the top prospect game. Good luck to everyone and I hope you have a great Jr year this HS season.
MidloDad I couldnt have said it any better. "Untill then Im staying home". What a drive! 795 miles one way. But it was worth it we had a great time. I really enjoyed the chance to see alot of kids I had heard about. And some I had never heard of as well. No one puts on a tournement or showcase like Perfect Game. Over 500 players and it was smooth as silk. I did meet several parents there. I had some great conversations with several moms and dads of players at the event. For some reason I keep missing you guys. Maybe we will meet in June. Untill then best of luck.
Baseball Buzz, PG Updated the web site posting and Mac is now listed as one of three "Biggest Surprises" after only 3 other pitchers threw harder.

I was standing behind the backstop and heard this colloquy between the PG scout on hand and one of Mac's teammates:

"Who is this kid?"

"I don't know. He was supposed to be our catcher!"
