If a high school player is a gifted athlete getting a lot of attention from college and pro scouts, but his grades and test scores don't pass the NCAA requirements, can he still expect bonus $$ even if college is not an option?

He loses negotiating leverage, and therefore money if the team that drafts him knows college is not an option.

There are some players/students who have struggled with grades in HS, but have been able to improve their grades somewhat in college as they matured. I believe Junior College (JUCO) athletes do not have to meet the NCAA requirements for initial eligibility, and various JUCO's have different academic requirements for admittance. (Though that is not to say that JUCO academics are inferior - my sister teaches at a JUCO in Minnesota and I know she is an excellent teacher who cares very much about her students.)
At any rate, perhaps the student/athlete you are referring to should check out possibilities with some JUCO's.
