play baseball,
I hope that you don't get a hard time from mr. Woodman. Smile

It's funny how we all have opinions on the subject, I feel that instead of taking the time for the young to learn cursive, spend more time teaching skills on the pc, because just like many things in life, certain skills we needed will eventually become unnecessary and obsolete for the future. Provide a pc for the writing part of tests. Provide printers in classrooms. Spend more time on speaking english properly rather than writing, this I find to be a skill lacking in our youth. I would much prefer that son or daugther be able to carry on a conversation with a coach over the phone or in person (job interview) rather than spell a word or two wrong on an application. Giving a spelling list on monday to take home and memorize for a test on friday has become meaningless, I'd rather you spend more time with a book, seeing the words over and over rather than memorizing it. The problem is that the rules in english language are much more difficult than most other languages. That's why so many adult foreigners won't learn.

A few years back I applied for a job, given a list of words to mark off if spelled properly or not, this was for PHONE sales, I passed. Last year I applied for a job and they told me that my pc skills were not adequate. Personally, I think it was their way of telling me I was too old for the job. Frown

I think a lot of the problem is that us older folks want the young to conform to doing things our way, not their way.

JMO.
All relative to where you come from, yesterday I was talking to someone from a deep south state, I had absolutely no clue what they were saying, proper grammar or not, it was not the english I am familiar with. Frown

Living where I am, I also need to brush up on my creole and spanish. Smile
Grammar and baseball don't go together. The debate about "book larning" has been going on since the Pilgrims landed.

The transition in language you are seeing now is no different than in the 1920's, or 1960's when youth crafted slang to distinguish themselves from previous generations. As several posters have already noted, this is a result of social networking, the use of new technology which encourages a communication shorthand, music, TV, and a youth culture which dominates in this country.

Youth have always been decadent and society has always been on the decline. Yet we somehow keep plugging along.
Communication is about the exhange of ideas. I think sometimes we get so wrapped up in the manner of the exchange we lose sight of the substance of the ideas.

ETA: Besides, who's to say what is proper or not? It's relative to the age. Olde English was proper in 1500 but would be oddly out of place now.

Spelling might not be all that important to get your message across but it can make you look uneducated or keep you from climbing the employment ladder.

Aoccdrnig to rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. In my catholic school, they wouldn't let us use pens until we can show the nuns that we had good penmanship.

But then as an adult, it turns out that the snartest people and the ones making the big bucks have the sloppiest handwriting :

I agree with TPM's comment. I actually like the short-hand when texting. But my concern is the lack of formal "speaking skills" being taught today. Yes, it's an electronic world we live in, but the kids DO need to occasionally speak formally without slang and expletives! Eek
