Our family will be relocating to the DFW area this spring. My oldest son will be a 9th grader next year. He plays both basketball & baseball but his primary focus is baseball. Wondering if anyone can give me any insight on the 3 schools baseball programs. We were leaning towards Grapevine or Colleyville until my realtor sent me the D-Magazine issue about Southlake. After reading that we are more confused.... I must have missed the national media attention regarding steroids at Colleyville. That's pretty scary.

Keller should be on your list, and make sure you tell your realtor that you want Keller High School, not Central or Fossil Ridge.

Southlake is definately a great district, as is Colleyville.

Grapevine, well, lets just say I like the other three better.

And if you think the steroid problem in HS is limited to Colleyville Heritage, you are wrong.
OKCM, We have been in the GCISD for 10 years. We live in C'ville, have a soph at G'vine who is successfully competing in the baseball program, and a 7th grader upcoming. As well as other districts out there, this is a fabulous one for many reasons.

I would encourage you to contact principals Jerry Hollingsworth at Grapevine (jerry.hollingsworth@gcisd.net) or Becky Prentice at Colleyville (becky.prentice@gcisd.net) and ask anything you wish.

Please feel free to PM me for more specific info.

OK, I'll join in. Mansfield Summit. Great facilities, great support, competitive district, highest TAKS scores in MISD. Made big strides in our first year here last season.

Bring your love for the game with you!
Unless you come back and tell us your son is being predicted to be the next Area Code stand out - I agree with an earlier comment

Look at academics

Also - look at high school coaches. Treat it like a college. Look at school, facilities, and maybe even meet the coach. Do they have indoor facilities, enclosed batting cages.... alot of factors.

The drive time will play HEAVILY into your decision - unless you like sitting in traffic for and hour each day - each way
OKCM,

Academics,Commute,baseball facilities, and coaching......answer COPPELL.

Coach English and Coach Chasteen will work together if you son is really a two sport star.

Batting Cage is enclosed + Indoor facility.

Great Academics. Don't forget about the commute to the baseball and basketball events....Coppell is centrally located.

Besides 6-5A is a better sports district for baseball and basketball...if your sons played football then maybe you look at Southlake.

Good post MeatsDad

Coppell and Southlake are one high school towns so the cream rises to the top and does not get deluted as much in other districts. What occurs is that some kids who might make the cut do may not in a one high school town. Roster space is limited....

Coppell has a great program. My vote they are team to beat in 6-5A in 2008

Now i hope that does not offend anyone! JMHO
I think OKCMOM focused first on the communities and their schools academic reputations and then narrowed it down to those communities that had the sports programs they desire for their family.....

I would imagine the mom also looked at churches in the area and is going to select a community close to the church they want to attend.

Let's give this women a little credit. She is doing her research.

I wish her and her family the best in their search for a new DFW community to call home.....

Our family does really like Coppell for the proximity to our church, the academics (we have one daughter that is on an Academic Scholarship), proximity to the two airports because I travel for business, and yes because of good sports programs from T-Ball, s****r, through HS.

OKCityMom,

You have a good “short list”, but I would replace Grapevine with Keller in a heartbeat. After that, you have three communities with much more to offer than just their great baseball programs. However, they also have very different styles. Years ago, when we moved here from California we also considered Keller, Southlake, and Colleyville. We rented for about six months before buying a house. It gave us time to get the feel for the area and confirm our decision. (We have been very happy with Keller High School.) If you rent before buying, it also helps avoid UIL eligibility problems if you decide to change schools.

This is your first post so we do not know anything about your son but these are some things to consider and be prepared for:

Most kids do not make it past freshman baseball and even fewer will ever be Varsity starters.

These are growing areas and every year we see kids transfer here because they are great communities and schools with outstanding baseball programs. Year after year most of these kids do not make the team; much less earn a starting position. It has nothing to do with any “good old boy network” or anything like that. It has everything to do with competition and talent. These are big schools. Most of the transfer kids and their parents are unaware of the level of competition they will face.

Will you and your son still be happy with your choice if he does not play baseball? Would you both be happier if you picked a smaller program and he did play?

Obrady is active on this forum and made the move into this area last year. He started this thread before his move. Westlake area baseball. It may provide some additional insight. They ended up at Northwest High School. If he does not offer a public opinion, you can send him a PM and see what he has to say privately.

Driving in Dallas, Texas

First you must learn to pronounce the city name. It is DAL-LUS, or DAA-LIS depending on if you live inside or outside LBJ Freeway.

Next, if your Mapsco is more than a few weeks old, throw it out and buy a new one. If in Denton County and your Mapsco is one-day-old, then it is already obsolete. Forget the traffic rules you learned elsewhere. (Frisco has screwed everything up.)

Dallas has its own version of traffic rules... "Hold on and pray." There is no such thing as a dangerous high-speed chase in Dallas . We all drive like that.

All directions start with, "Get on Beltline," which has no beginning and no end. (It REALLY DOESN'T!!!)

The morning rush hour is from 6 to 10. The evening rush hour is from 3 to 7. Friday's rush hour starts Thursday morning.

If you actually stop at a yellow light, you will be rear-ended, cussed out and possibly shot. When you are the first one on the starting line, count to five when the light turns green before going to avoid crashing with all the drivers running the red light in cross-traffic.

Construction on Central Expressway is a way of life and a permanent form of entertainment. We had sooo much fun with that, we have added George Bush Freeway and the High Five to the mix.

All unexplained sights are explained by the phrase, "Oh, we're in Fort Worth !"

If someone actually has his or her turn signal on, it is probably a factory defect. Car horns are actually "Road Rage" indicators - and remember, it's legal to be armed in Texas ..

All old ladies with blue hair in a Mercedes have the right of way. Period. And remember, it's legal to be armed in Texas

Inwood Road, Plano Road, NW Highway, East Grand, Garland Road, Marsh Lane, Josey Lane, 15th Street, Preston Road all mysteriously change names as you cross intersections (these are only a FEW examples). The perfect example is what is MOSTLY known as Plano Road On the south end, it is known as Lake Highlands Drive, cross Northwest Highway and it becomes Plano Road, go about 8 miles and it is briefly Greenville Ave,
Ave K, and Highway 5. It ends in Sherman ..

The North Dallas Tollway is our daily version of NASCAR. The minimum acceptable speed on the Dallas North Toll Road is 85 mph. Anything less is considered downright sissy. It also ends in Sherman .

The wrought iron on windows near Oak Cliff and Fair Park is not ornamental!!

A trip across town east to west will take a minimum of four hours, although many nort h/south freeways have unposted minimum speeds of 75.

It is possible to be driving WEST in the NORTH-bound lane of EAST NORTHWEST Highway. Don't let this confuse you.

LBJ is called "The Death Trap" for two reasons: "death" and "trap."

If it's 100 degrees, Thanksgiving must be next weekend. If it's 10 degrees and sleeting/snowing, theFort Worth Stock Show is going on. If it has rained 6 inches in the last hour, the Byron Nelson Golf Classic is in the second round (if it's Spring) - and it is the Texas State Fair if it's Fall.

If you go to the Fair, pay the $8.00 to park INSIDE Fair Park . Parking elsewhere could cost up to $2500 for damages, towing fees, parking tickets, and possibly a gunshot wound. If some guy with a flag tries to get you to park in his yard, run over him.

Any amusement parks, stadiums, arenas, racetracks, airports, etc., are conveniently located as far away from EVERYTHING as possible so as to allow for ample parking on grassy areas.

Final Warning: Don't Mess With Texas Drivers ... remember, it's legal to Be armed in Texas
