A buddy of mine asked me to skip watching the Ravens game today and come help him run his tryouts for his 13-under travel team.

Despite it being a little cold and windy, I had a ball! He asked me to wander around while others were running stations, and just observe the talent, and report back to him what I thought. I found myself teaching (not in depth, but little things here and there), and before I knew it, almost 2 hours had passed.

I really have missed coaching these past few years since my dad's death, and I was just thankful my friend asked me to participate. It was great!

For all the headaches and heartaches we face as coaches, we sure are lucky!!!

Mr. Thompson, That is a great post. Coaches are obviously an important part of baseball for any young man that loves the game. We've been more than blessed by the wonderful guys that have coached my son. One coach that son had from 10yrs through 14 yrs told my son at 12 years old that he wanted to be son's agent when he was grown. Son came home and made him a card on the computer - guy carried that in his wallet for years - may still have it. He as well as the other coaches made a difference in many ways in my son's life and will always be considered cherished family friends. I'm not sure that most coaches realize how deeply they touch a kid's life. Sounds like it may be time for you to consider reentering the coaching ranks!
Larry,

I think sometimes we forget just how big a part of our lives baseball really is. You are right about the headaches and heartaches, but for everyone of those, I can think of a good time. Just remember how many lives you have changed as a coach.

I received an email from one of my players from 2005 season who has moved on to a 4 year school; he started the letter with Dear Coach and it ended with "Much love and affection". I know I miss coaching between the white lines.
