I don't know if this is the right context, but for us, "grinding" is finding a way to do the job without getting into a smooth flow.

It is easy to look good on the field if you have your best stuff (Grade A), and everything is going well, but real players find a way even when they only have their "C"stuff.

Whenever I call a kid a "grinder", it is a compliment.

I always remind our players that the scorebook is not illustrated, so it is more important to be effective than pretty.
