If Hamels does not admit that he was throwing at him does he still get suspended?

What about the Nats pitcher that lster drilled Hamels?

He was not suspended because he was smart enough not to say anything?

Baseball's best teams lose about sixty-five times a season. It is not a game you can play with your teeth clenched.

I think it is accepted to a certain point that you can retaliate when someone does something gutless or bush league so that's why Hamels was suspended

Gutless? Really? He came up to bat the next inning and got hit. At least one league can say that.. the other not so much..

I'm not a fan of throwing at people just because, but in the big picture I think this whole thing was handled well. He hit Harper in the lower back and Harper went down to first base without a word. Then in the next half inning, Hamels was hit in the lower leg and just went to first base without a word.

No fuss.
We all know this happens in MLB...but you just cannot talk about it. Period.

I have 2 sons who have both faced Harper. One is older, the other is the same age (roughly) as Harper. Older one played with him last year in double-A. Neither has a bad word to say about him.

I will try to lay this out (carefully?). Harper is 19 and plays the game aggressively and more like a confident 30-year old veteran. This will get under the skin of veterans...who aren't sure he is showing due respect. Or just don't want to get beat (or 'shown up'(?)) by a 19-year old.

My older son gave up Harper's first pro home run in the AZFL a year and a half ago. He had an otherwise pretty good outing. The ball was auctioned on MLB...a fair number of my older son's friends made sure to send him the link. While all in fun, this stings anyone with some pride. I texted my older son, 'Pretty good job today.' He responded, 'Yeah, but I gave up a home run to an 18-year old.'

I am not criticizing Hamels one single bit other than he shouldn't have talked about it. I am just trying to describe the feelings that I believe are out there.

I was sorta watching the game while on the phone. So I guess I missed what went on to start all of this.

There was a comment made about Harper questioning the strikezone in an earlier game and that some players took exception to the kid thinking he could do that. Hamels either flunked an IQ test or was looking for some time off.

...................well Hamels is a moron if he owned up to it.
This is what Hamels said yesterday:
link to article

"I was trying to hit him," Hamels said. "I mean, I'm not going to deny it. It's something that I grew up watching. I'm just trying to continue old baseball, because I think some people get away from it. I remember when I was a rookie, the strike zone was really, really small and you didn't say anything, because that's the way baseball is. But I think unfortunately sometimes the league is protecting certain players and making it not as that kind of old school, prestigious way of baseball."

Hamels went on to say Harper got even by stealing home.

There was a lot of hype for this series. The Nationals had become rather frustrated by legions of Phillies fans invading their stadium. It was time to fight back- Nationalize! I think they did pretty well. It's good for baseball. Sorry to see Jayson Werth get injured like that.

+1 Bulldog. Very well said
Given all the scrutiny and criticism Harper has faced since finding himself on the SI cover a few years back, I find it rather ironic that he handled this like a seasoned professional and let his response come through his play on the field by stealing home. Did he then jump up, gloat, point at Hamels, etc….nope, just headed to the dugout. The kid is going to be really good.

Hamels strikes me as a pretty smart guy...I'm wondering if this wasn't a calculated decision on his part.

This season leads up to his free agency year, is he trying to send a message that he is a tough minded "old school" pitcher that isn't afraid to take charge. Hamels would probably be the ace on 90% of the MLB teams but with Holiday and Lee in the rotation he is considered the Phillies #3. While most of us think its pretty stupid for him to admit that he did it intentionally, I'm wondering if many of the players and organizations out there like what he did?

Call me old school but I understand why Hamels did what he did and why (Harper complaining about the pitcher's strike zone in an earlier game). Players just don't do that, especially rookies. Obvioulsy he was sending a message and I am sure that Hamels became the designated "hitter" so to speak. What really messed the whole thing up was the pitcher hitting Hamels. It had already been settled by Harper stealing home.

I agree much of this is old school vs. new school.

Harper took his base and Hamels owned up to why he did what he did. He's suspended 5 games, he won't miss his start, maybe less money in the bank but sometimes you just got to do what you got to do. This is not unusual.

I have no issue with Harper, he plays with a chip on his shoulder but he's 19, he will mature and learn what they refer to as "the code". Smile

If you are TRULY old school, you don't have to say it or say anything. People know it.

Respect is earned. Hamels is trying way too hard. The rookie schooled him on being old school by his attitude, reaction and play on the field....it didn't hurt that he stole home.

I'm really looking forward to the next Nats/Phillies game because I don't think this is over by any means. Somebody is going to get hit, and hit hard. If I was Hunter Pence, I wouldn't be digging in.
