A D1 school on the W.Coast wants my nephew to verbally commit to a spring signing. Although it’s a very good school and high on the list, it’s not his #1 choice. His #1 choice has also expressed significant interest (the ‘we’ll be following closely your senior year’ approach). Is it appropriate to use as leverage the offer from the school doing the more aggressive pursuit?

This is strictly my personal opinion and not intended to be the authoritve...but I would read between those lines of the coach from the #1 choice school to mean, "If your kid shows up and is Sandy Koufax or Micky Mantle his senior year, you'll hear from us". In short, I think there is a lot of room for interpretation of, "significant interest".

I wouldn't call it leverage, just adult conversation, but absolutely I would have son talk with coach of #1 choice and let him know that there's an attractive offer on the table. His response will be telling.

Ryno gave great advice, to go where they want you. I would not however worry about the verbal, if you both agree on the terms, and he verbals, %99.9 it's as good as done.

One thing you should talk about with your son, is the pressure of his senior year, with no deal done. The season could be quite different for him if he is still auditioning vs. being done.

Good luck to you and your son, you should be very excited.

Thanks for everyones quick response as we'll have a follow-up face to face with the coaching staff this weekend.

Homer....It's clear they are looking for a committ NOW! We're definetly feeling the pressure to accept in fear of losing out on a good oppertunity all together & who knows....maybe no oppertunity later on. Tough decision.
What ever happened to up close and honest approach. If all things are even and it deciding factor is favorite tag I would call the #1 choice and tell him that there is an offer on the table from Team X and and out respect you want them on the same page. You're going to find out real fast how serious they are.

your instincts are pretty good ...

which staff are you going face to face with?

if ya have it with the #1 choice 1rst, you'll have likely know what you (son) has to do
Bee: face to face is follow-up with choice #2.... agressive pursuer.

NY....like your comment; that's putting it all out on the table. I think we're heading in that direction.

On a side note I read a prior thread and couldn't agree more on this moron; "STEVEN A SMITH. He is the biggest idiot on the air today" I hope there's ESPN brass on this site; as soon as I hear this guys voice or see his mug I'm out of there!
Go where you are most wanted. In the end that is where you will be the happiest because that is the team that probably wants to see you on the field and wants to invest in you now not in the ole let's wait and see. The team that wants you now sees something they like in you that the first choice team doesn't or doesn't need to fill position you play. Do some research on who they have and who is coming back and who they recruited in the early season.
Schools have a depth chart about who they recruit and when. They may expect someone to get drafted but are not sure if he goes or not. That would mean that you have to wait until after the draft.
