We have gone thru this so many times I hate to repeat it but it BEARS REPEATING--Follow up on what your guidance counselors are doing---ask them to give you a cop of what they send out---do not forget they are working for you--got a call the other day from a college coach--he asked what happened to so and so---he was going to apply for admission--never heard a thing--I spoke to the player last nite--his counselor sent in the forms etc but left certain things out--thus the application was returned to the player to be completed

As we have said before---you have to be involved !!! Especially at crunch time

This is a great piece of advice. Never sit back and assume they have done what you have asked them to do. I remember getting a call saying "We have not recieved your information". I go by the school and the letter was still sitting on the desk for over a week. Seems someone took a couple of weeks off from work. I can tell you some horry stories but you get the point. Follow up and dog them , be persistent and always get copies of everything you give them to send in.
High school counselors are busy people and you need to be proactive. We have found that the same holds true of JC counselors. They have a lot of kids to deal with and don't even know you as well as the high school counselors. They are hard to get in touch with. Some JC's have one of the assistants as a team counselor, which is good.
This is one example of not taking your own responsiblity of making sure you are taking the right classes:

Someone on here asked me about Joyce a week or so ago and I promised an update on the talented left-handed pitcher, so here's the update.

I spoke with a couple of very good sources out on the West Coast about this issue and it's sad to say the least.

The former 10th round pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who decided to attend UCSB instead of signing a pro contract, basically was deemed ineligible by the NCAA clearinghouse at the last second because of some class credit issues back in high school.

As a result of this and as you might expect, Joyce is redshirting this season and will be available to play as a redshirt freshman next season.

Pretty sad and tough deal all the way around.

NCAA ineligible

I have also heard of cases where players at their current colleges be told by their non-athletic advisors about dropping classes which caused them to be ineligible for the spring season.
