OK, so I never actually SAW this happen, but what if ...

- Batter bunts.
- Ball ends up directly front of home plate.
- As batter/runner heads to first, catcher picks up ball and attempts to tag him from behind.
- During the attempted tag, catcher immediately loses possession of the ball as it goes directly into batter/runner's back pocket -- and stays lodged there.

Questions:
Is he out?
If he's not out, can he keep running -- beyond first?
Can a fielder attempt to retrieve the ball before the ump calls time? Smile

What's the call?

The ball is dead, the batter gets 1st.

Good question.

Thanks, Dash. Just curious -- which specific rule from OBR governs this situation?

And while I realize that this is an umpiring forum, not scorekeeping -- with the batter getting 1st, I'm wondering what he would get credited with.

And finally ... to add to the wackiness of this situation ... had there been a runner on 3rd, would he be allowed to score, or would he be sent back to 3rd?

For FED, the Rule is 8-3-3-f (ball becomes lodged in an offensive player's equipment). Other runners advance only if they were stealing on the pitch.

Actually it states that each runner is awarded one base if he was attempting to advance at the time the ball became lodged in the offensive players uniform or equipment. I don't see any reference to stealing on the pitch.

Yeah. I guess "attempting to advance at the time the ball became lodged" is more liberal than that.
