Last year, when my son play in the small field, coach never ordered a HBP even though batters were crowding the plate like crazy. In the regular season, he had over 140 strikeouts and 0 HBP. He pitched inside once awhile to buzz the batters and never aim directly at a batter which could be dangerous. In an all star game, he hit a batter on the forearm swinging and the batter had to be taken out of the game in pain. The coach and his batter should know the risk of crowding the plate. The pitcher is going to go inside on you and you will get hit if the pitch is slightly off. So if a pitch hit the batter, it is not the fault of the pitcher.

It's the unwritten rule that has prevailed in adult baseball for over a century now. It's how the players police their sport.

The operative word there is “ADULT”. Things change a whole lot when there are adults doing it as opposed to non-adults. But too many people try to apply adult values to kids, and its a accident waiting to happen.
