Couple of schools that 2014 is interested in, the head coach is pitching coach. Should son contact him or start with recruiting coordinator? Thanks.

Start with Head Coach. If Head Coach wants you to work with Recruiting Coach, he'll tell you. When/if it comes time for crunch time (offers), make sure the head coach is involved in the process. Good luck.
At my son's school, the head coach is the pitching coach. However, other than when we met him and he made an offer and when we went to the school and accepted the offer, all communication has been with the recruiting coordinator. Recruiting coordinator is the one who initially contacted us and coordinated all future requests to see son pitch and scheduled on campus visits. Since the acceptance, head/pitching coach hasn't made any contact, only the recruiting coach.
I'm not saying that you can't contact the head coach, I'm just saying that in our case, everything other than the official business has been handled by the recruiting guy.

* pitching coaches who were also the recruiting coordinator,
* recruiting coordinators who were not the pitching coach,
* pitching coaches who were not the recruiting coordinator and
* head coaches who were neither the pitching coach nor the recruiting coordinator...
and, in at least one case...
* pitching coach was volunteer coach and could not recruit.
Bottom line, recruiting comes in all shapes and sizes.

I'm with Fenway on this, if HC doesn't, can't or tells you to work with RC, you are not #1 and playing time will be minimal.
Also when things don't work out, they can't blame the other coach for telling you things HC wasn't aware of.

I don't think thats exactly what he is saying. I think he's just saying that the HC should/will get involved at 'crunch time.' The OP was asking a question about his 2014 son, so he's pretty early in the process and not many HC's will be significantly involved at this point.
Most kids recruited to Stanford, for example, will have nearly all of it go through the recruiting coordinator. HC will usually close the deal.
Our older son was recruited almost exclusively by the HC, but he also lives about 5 blocks away from us and even he told us that the RC is the guy who figures out who they go after.
