League rules state no head first slide unless returning to a bag. Nephew gets caught in a rundown between second and third. After several back and forths, he goes for third base with a head first slide...safe! Other team appeals, saying he should be out for the head first slide but ump says he was returning to the bag...safe. I believe we got away with one. What do you think?

You cannot return to somewhere you haven't been.

Not quite....it was you who asked for knowledgable advice on head first slides.....I do not work any leagues that ban the head first slide....nor I have ever...

This is a high school site, so you will find our answers lean on the NFHS code....and you will also find that most of us also do games under the NCAA code.........and that our other games are done under the OBR code....

One of our senior umpires, MST, is a longtime trainer of LL umpires, and that is what code I assume your games were played under...he will be along shortly and will give you a ruling....

we endeavor to answer all questions...but you may need to be patient until a crew member with that knowledge can reply......

But on the other hand, Jimmy is often right

This is the most philosophical statement I've ever read on an umpire forum.

I agree with Matt. "Returning to a bag" implies your runner has already achieved that bag. Being caught in a run-down between 2B and 3B doesn't mean your runner is returning to 3B.
OK, I'm here. Smile LL and I believe at least one other code, does not allow headfirst slides while advancing on any 60ft, 90ft it's OK. If you are in a rundown he can't slide headfirst advancing but he can retreating. So in your case, you did get the benefit of an incorrect call.
In the future state the rulecode you are playing under to better assist us in making the correct ruling. We do get a certain amount of trolls so just make sure you are clarify what you are asking.

Thank you. I appreciate the advice. I do not like being accused of something I am not participating in, and I apologize for my short fuse in dealing with certain comments that were made. Sorry Jimmy, but you made the wrong call on that one. I hope to add positively to this forum in the future. Thank you for your time gentlemen, Coach T
The no-heafirst slide into a base is pretty prevelant in LL and Babe Ruth up to the 13-15, 16-18 year-old divisions where it generally allows it. That has been my experience at least in Central FL.

Generally a good rule as fingers, thumbs, wrists injuries are common, and as we saw from Josh Hamilton's awkward slde in Texas which left him with a broken arm.

Must be younger person baseball.

Not that there is anything wrong with that. My youngest is playing 14u right now.

PONY National Rules do not prohibit head first slides....your local league must have inserted that into their rules.....

Good to hear. I was going to post on this, but my most recent PONY rule book is from '92, and I didn't know if they had changed their rules.
