deldad ...

I watched that replay over and over and thought perhaps Holliday did get a piece of the plate as his hand was sliding right near the catcher's cleats. And the delayed call ... perhaps the umpire was waiting for the catcher do 'make a statement' and since he didn't 'complain', the umpire called Holliday safe.

Just wondering how Holliday's mouth is ... he dragged his face thru the dirt quite a way and I would imagine his lip is like hamburger meat this morning. Ouch that looked like it hurt.
IMHO, Holliday wouldn't truck Bennet because of risk of injury -- he's looking at post season play.

Head first, the runner can avoid the blocking catcher and get a fingertip on the plate (or not Wink); feet first, the runner might jam an ankle into the catcher as he's got to go straight for the plate, thus risking injury and being blocked and called out.
Since you can't knock the catcher down in high school ball [or college ball, I think] my rule is the same as I was taught by my father. Head first if the plate is not blocked and open, spikes first if the plate is blocked [assuming you have enough awarness to note the distinction and enough time to adjust you slide].

Today's "MILLION $$$$$$ BABY" has decided to play the game a little different than "Charlie Hustle" did back in the day.
