SP_son and I went up to the University of Maryland today to watch UNC v. UMD. After an extra inning win by the Terps last night, this one tilted towards UNC early, and kept tipping their way as the day wore on.

The reason for this post has little to do with the game itself, and everything to do with a few observations surrounding the game.

There was a young man wearing #19 for UNC who was a joy to watch. He was not in the lineup today, but as the team took pre-game, he was working hard behind the dish, making every play, staying fundamentally sound, and hustling every moment. Pregame ended with him catching a tough pop-up, showing the ball, and then hustling over to the team, high-fiving guys, and firing up the squad.

Every time he popped out to warm-up a pitcher between innings, or go to the pen, he took to the task with total heart, hustle, and great fundamentals. Throughout the game I kept an eye on him, and he was the guy up on the rail leading the cheers. He was the guy out there giving an at-a-boy to a teammate after a big hit, or as they came off the field.

You could tell that this young man by the name of May loves what he does, respects the game, and that he knows how to play the game right. It was a real pleasure watching a young man go after everything he did with total heart, hustle & a commitment to fundamentals ... even when he was not in the starting lineup. You gotta love it.

A tip of the cap to a young catcher, chasing his baseball dreams.

Coach May, there's something even more inspiring in spd's post than reading about a 5-for-5 game or a no hitter or whatever, because what this describes is the absolute essence of sport. I loved reading this, and I would like to share it with my HS team -- they're 7-0 right now, but they are a quiet bunch on the field and I am perpetually blue in the face trying to get them psyched, talking, chattering, EXCITED! This is what I need them to read.

Thanks for posting spd, and Coach - excellent job raising that young man
I am proud that I had the privilege to read that story

Thanks for posting that SPD!

It's easy to be a team player when they pencil your name in the lineup everyday and things are going your way. It is also not that difficult to say you are a team player. This young man shows what it really means. It means showing it, living it, and believing it.

I am 100% convinced that nothing this young man could ever do on the field would ever make his Dad more proud than what southpaw_dad has reported here. This young man has already achieved victory. He has refused to let someone elses decision define who he is or what he is about or what he thinks of himself. This is what we want from our role models. We want them to stand up and be counted EVEN when the chips are not going their way.

There is one element that we don't talk about here much at the hsbbweb and that is luck. All this young man needs is for one, and I mean one break to go his way. When that happens, look out because he has already succeeded in his own mind. He has the vision and it is just a matter of time.
