It is 32 outside and our coach is running a scrimmage. Can someone give me websites or any information on why kids should not be playing in this type of weather. I know that metal bats can get ruined but what about injuries. Are pitchers more likely to get hurt, are more muscles pulled. I know that the players can not field balls because they can not feel their fingers. I need help!!!!! I would like to be able to give the coach and AD some "expert" opinions about why baseball should not be played in this weather. By the, way the wind is blowing, we are not far from Lake Erie, I wonder what the wind chill factor is?

I see from your profile that your son is a junior in HS and you are from Ohio. I am not about to choose sides here because of factors that I am sure that I am not aware of. This includes what facilities are available for indoor use and whether or not they have to be shared with another sport. Time allotment is a factor as well as available equipment. Also your state regulations about length of spring practice time may be a factor. Some places may have as little as three weeks to prepare to play.
Granted the scrimage may not be as productive as the coach would like but in probability he probably made sure that the kids were properly warmed up and stretched before beginning the scrimage to minimize potential for injury.
I understand your concern for the players well being and your concerns are justified. You also made the choice to support your own young player as a member of the team. I personally do not think that trying to gain support for your statement is going to resolve what has allready occured.
As a parent I feel that I have the right to question the rationale behind the coach's decision and would call and request a personal meeting with him and or the AD. As a coach, I personally do not have any issues with being held accountable with my decision and would not mind trying to explain why I did what I did.
I do not know if you have spoken to the coach at this time. I would personally hold you in much higher regard if you chose to approach me first with your concerns instead of searching for support from outside sources that do not know both parties and the conditions that led to this conflict of interest.
FYI, John Winkin wrote a book entitled "Maximizing Baseball Practice" that may prove benificial to both you and any coach (especially those in the north). I am not trying to further upset you but I am trying to shed some light that may open your eyes to another point of view.
i can refer you to websites, etc. with the opposite viewpoint of yours. as long as the kids are properly warmed up and warmed down. theres alot of games in this area played in the 30s. we play in the spitting snow often this time of year. theres also alot of college and pro games played in the 30s - especially early and in pro ball late. playoffs, world series.

yes we have the mets. have a new stadium thats 7 or 8 years old. nice. we get to play a few games on it every year. we always play the preliminary game to the virginia tech/etsu game every year in kingsport and we'll play our district tourney there some. db still plays at the old field. theyve done alot of work to it too. its very nice now also. new wall, high tech scoreboard, huge indoor facility, etc.
did you play for the mets or another team in the league?
i knew some guys from around that time. lived in an apartment of my neighbors - kevin mitchell, herm winningham and several others.
I was on the Bluefield Orioles in 1981 and 1982. I knew Kevin quite well and remember Herm for sure. They were at instructional league in 81 in St. Pete Florida and we trained at the same facility. Kevin was huge, even at that age. It was neat seeing him years later in the show. Dwight Gooden was on the Kingsport team in 1982 and a few other guys that played in the show. As a matter of fact, just this last December, the baseball winter meetings were held here in Dallas and I saw Steve Phillips from ESPN and asked him if he played there in Kingsport in 1981 and he said he did. I always thought I had remembered his name from when I played there!

1981 & 82 were incredible years for the league. There were many guys from those 2 years that made it to the big leagues.

I'm glad to hear there is still a team there and they are doing well. That was a great time in my life that I wouldn't trade for much of anything!!

The scariest part was flying into the Tri-County Airport on a prop plane!! Wouldn't wish that on anybody.

Thanks for the update!
