There's a bill called the Breast Cancer Patient
Protection Act which will require insurance
companies to cover a minimum 48-hour hospital stay for patients undergoing a mastectomy. It's about eliminating the "drive-through mastectomy" where women are forced to go home hours after surgery against the wishes of their doctor, still groggy from anesthesia and sometimes with drainage tubes still attached.

Lifetime Television has put this bill on their web page with a petition drive to show your support. The bill has been languishing in Committee since February, 2001 and needs to be woken up.

PLEASE!!!! Sign the petition by clicking on the web site below and help women living with breast cancer get the care they need and deserve!! There is no cost or monetary pledge involved. You need not give more than your name and zip code number.

Petition

This takes about 2 seconds. PLEASE PASS THIS ON.
THANKS

And if you REALLY want to help, send a letter of support for Bill 1886 to your own Senator and Representative.

Orlando,

I want to know if my signature actually does anything on this web-site. It has been around for at least a year or so and I have signed and sent it on each time I received it. But to date, I have not seen any legislation that indicates this is helping.

What else can we do as women? As someone that always has to have at least 2 mammograms a year (every 6 months, mind you, for extra screenings), I am very concerned and want to do whatever I can to help.

Susan
Catch, apparently the petition is forwarded to Rep. DeLaur (CN) who re-introduced the bill in April. However as she is pushing the bill, the petition is for her ammunition. That's why I included the suggestion to write your own Representative and Senator. Congress is only going to care if they believe it will impact votes.

My sister-in-law, sadly, did not survive a particularly fast-growing cancer.
