When did college athletes begin receiving scholarships, and why?

Do you think athletic scholarships are truly necessary to support a solid team?

Would it mean that, say, University of Kansas would be almost strictly a local-product team, and would there be anything wrong with that?

What would the landscape look like without athletic scholarships?

Go to town, Websters!

Krak,

Good questions--I'm going to just guess on the reason why athletic scholarships started as being either to lure superior athletes as they are now instead of under the table payments and put everybody on a level playing field. My other reason was probably in the 20's and 30's rural kids or poor kids from the cities literally couldn't go to college unless they got room and board paid for. Still thinking about the other questions and don't have a clue about when athletic scholarships started. It may have been earlier than I think.
