We have our first 12U USSSA tournament this weekend. I am very excited for the opportunity to manage this team and to have my oldest son coaching with me. We also have the HS varsity coach's son on this team and the HS coach is on our staff. We have a fantastic group of players and parents, most of which have been playing together since the boys were in T-ball and coaches pitch.

I don't know if we are tournament ready, but the boys are getting some quality instruction and fundamentals from the HS coach and my son. Fortunately, none of us are ego driven. As I told all of the parents going in, the primary goal for this team is instruction and to prepare the boys for the next level.

This will be our first tournament together. While we will certainly try to win, our primary goal is to play fundamentally sound baseball.

Win or lose, it should be a lot of fun! Please wish us luck.

Ross.

Callaway,

I realize your intentions, and I for one admire what you and your son are doing. Please keep in mind that half will love you and half will hate you when the season is over. It doesn't matter what you do, this is the reality of select baseball.

However; The players on the team will always remember you and what you did for them. When you see them in high school they will always say hi, give you a hug and say thanks.

In most situations, you are correct. Not all, but most.

I know a few teams that retain all of their kids each year.

callaway, that's a great goal & the same as we had at that age - - the odd thing is, it never changed, tho I thought it would

when I talked about that recently with my college son - - he said his focus is still on executing fundamentals - - the wins seem to take care of themselves

I have a feeling your guys will surprise you with their game readiness Smile

Callaway--We too, had our first 12U tournament this weekend. My son's coaches have pretty much the same philosophy as yours--basic fundamentals. The boys did very well and played well enough to be playing in the semi's on Monday. They have only been together for a couple weeks but we saw many great things. The kids had a blast and seem like they have been together for a long time. I foresee many great times for the boys. I hope yours fair as well and maybe even better. Good luck!
This thread is funny because my son's 10U team played in its first tournament this past weekend at Disney. It was my first such experience as a parent and I was much more nervous than I ever thought I would be! It was great fun, though, for all. Team did well, finishing second in the 10u's ..... as fate would have it, his team is playing in another tournament this weekend, and their first game is against the team that beat them last weekend! Chance for some sweet revenge!

You must enjoy playing with dynamite!
"E..X..P..L..O..S..I.. Ahhh, I just can't make out the last couple of letters. Strike a match, will ya?"

Good luck Big Grin
Cal,
Best of luck. Enjoy! Our (14u) fall tournament season will start in a couple weeks and at the moment it looks like we've got the strongest team we've had (above average USSSA AAA or mediocre major team) so far with a well matched group of kids who enjoy playing together. We're probably 1 stud pitcher from being a decent USSSA major team but we'll stick with the kids we've got and hope our pitchers develop.

BTW, I think having the HS coach on the staff will work out great. We played a team a few times this year who had a HS coach on the staff and his son on the team. They were a very well coached team as one would expect from a coach whose team won back to back HS national championships.
Thanks everyone, I appreciate the words of encouragement ...and the warnings. Smile Fortunately we have a group of parents and players that I have been around a long time. We were careful to stay away from the known problems. We'll see how it goes.

Lefty's Dad

We are playing in six tournaments this fall, all in Lexington. The tournament this weekend has 10 teams entered. Come on down this fall. I'd enjoy meeting you.

That was fun!

We finished 0-4. Not so good, but we out hit our opponents 32-24 and we were in every game. We should have won 3 of the 4 and could have won the 4th. We had the lead in every game.

Our boys were tight and nervous. In 4 games we had 14 errors and walked 24 batters! Can't win like that. We'll work those things out and move forward.

We competed at the AAA/Major level and for our first tournament we held our own.

4-1 loss to the Carolina Stars (Played in AAU Nationals)
7-4 loss to the Chapin A's (comprised of this year's Dixie WS team)
14-11 Tie breaker loss to the Low Country Lightning
7-4 loss to the Palmetto Titans (Played in AAU Nationals)

We can take some positive things away from the tournament and we'll work on the rest. All-in-all it was a very good experience.

Thanks,
Ross.
