That is what I am saying---in the case cited did the umpire differentiate the hand being separate from the hat?

From the OP:

"...he grabs his hat and touches first with it."

No mention of the hand touching the bag. Why would he describe the touch as being with the hat if the hand touched the bag? You seem to be stretching a bit. Of course, if I was caught screwing up a rule that bad, I'd probably be trying to extricate myself as well.

is the hat considered any less a part of the uniform/equipment than the cleats? His foot never touches the bag, his cleats do, if his cleat comes off and he has his foot half way in it and touches the bag with the cleat, is the runner out, or is it considered detached equipment?

Here is one for you. It happened in a game a few years back. Pitcher has a hard one hopper hit back to him. The ball gets wedged in his glove and he can not get it out of the webbing. He tosses his glove with the ball inside of it to the 1b and the runner is called out. I already know the answer but what do you say?

Shoes and hats are the same. The tag is good when the shoe touches the bag if the players is wearing it at the time. Same with the hat.

If the player had his shoe in his hand and reached out and touched the bag it would not be a tag, same as the OP with the hat.

The uniform and its parts, when worn, are considered to be part of the body. Otherwise, a HBP would only count if the pitch hit bare skin.
