This is going on right now, a baseball player who also was high school football teams top wide receiver. The football coach wants him to play just football period, no baseball in the spring. Was upset he attended east coast pro showcase, so he suspended him for a number of games for football.

A number of people have told the player tell the football coach ok we will not play football at all, the coach will back down. This happen in the past and the coach caved in when he relize the team needed the player alot to win.

We had a player who was a star in football and baseball, and was offered scholarships for football and baseball at the University of Florida in 06. He was drafted by the Royals, first pick in the 4th round, and is now playing A ball.

Seems like the football coach is selling that player short.

How about talking to the AD?
quote:
He does not have the right to restrict his sports activity outside of the FB season.

where is the AD and other school officials when this stuff goes on. Had to ask

when I was coaching they had an all star football game in April? Over the years I had several players who took part. They did not miss any baseball games but left practice early to attend practice.

Can you imagine what the football coaches would have done if there was an all star baseball game the second wek in September. Just speculating
I know of a local kid who was rated a 10 by PG and has decided to not play football in his senior season. If it was me I'd say thanks coach it's been great. It seems coaches say they want you to play other sports until it comes right down to it. My sons school unfortunately, the varsity coach also coaches football. If you play football you have it made in baseball.
The AFLAC game had at least three players who were similarly affected.

One player had a minor injury, but ultimately his real reason for missing the game was that he was his HS football team's captain and he felt he should be there for the first practices. That was the kid's decision and that's OK (though I think he made a bad decision and really missed out on something special).

The other two that I know of were threatened with suspensions from their football teams if they missed football practices to go to AFLAC. Both of these players had the moxie to tell their football coaches they were heading to the AFLAC game and whatever consequences they felt they had to impose would be dealt with upon their return.

IMHO, these football coaches are WAY out of line.

First of all, to pretend that a few practices are more important to the one team player affected, who is getting an opportunity of a lifetime, is bogus.

Secondly, does anyone really think the football coach would stand for having the baseball coach tell his players they couldn't play football anymore? Or that they couldn't miss a baseball preseason workout or two to go to a high school All-American football game? This "football is king" attitude is nothing but arrogance masquerading as a "team first" policy. Actually, calling it arrogance is kind. It's more of a power trip than anything.

Third, in our state at least, the VHSL imposes limits on what coaches can demand of players in the offseason. So the football coach is actually violating the rules when he starts telling kids what they must and must not do when he's trying to rule the parts of the calendar the VHSL does not give him control over.

The question asked above is the right one: Where is the AD in all this?

I'll tell you what, if it happened to my boy, the offending coach would get an up-close and personal meeting with me, and we would go to successive superiors until somebody with sufficient authority put a stop to it.
