Monday was my sons first Freshmen home game. I decided for the first time in ages to record the game with my dvd video recorder. He started on the bump in the first inning. Recorded his first strikeout as a pitcher and his first out defensively. He faces four batters and that ends the top of the first inning. Now its the bottom of the first inning , their turn to bat. They have him batting in the the number four slot . The player prior to him hit for a single and was standing on first base. My son gets in the batters box, goes thru the usual routine he does, gets signals from the coach and gets set for his first high school pitch as a batter to be delivered. He swings at the first pitch , (my face is glued to the video camera) I hear a smack - a loud roar comes from the crowd , I look up I see the ball sailing over the scoreboard for his first home run . I captured the event on video, while he takes the home run trot around the bases and the team comes out to congratulate him. What a way to start off the first year of high school baseball. One of the interesting things about this that I forgot to mention, is that for about three weeks prior to the first home game he has been training in a new facility that opened in town. It is owned by a former MLB pitcher. In this new facility they have a batting cage area with a new machine called the Pro-Batter or sometimes called the P1. It has a large screen at the end where the ball comes out. You enter the cage and input your age and height and speed you want your pitches. My son was hitting in the college level where the pitches are from 85 to 91 and it mixes the pitches with fastballs, change ups, curve balls and sliders, Once you have entered the data the machine starts. As a batter you see an actual pitcher on the screen winding up and when his arm gets to where the ball is released it comes from out of the screen. It is the closest thing to live pitching since you never know what pitch sequence the computer will bring at you. My son was telling me about three days before the first home game that he had been visualizing hitting the home run while he was hitting in the Pro-Batter. Here is a link if you would like to see what the pro-batter is all about. http://www.probatter.com/
