First, I should start off by saying I am 6'5" 160lbs, so I have a projectable pitcher's build, which is good but has made coaches overlook my hitting until I greatly outperform my teammates.  I played freshman ball, and I got to pitch a lot, but did not get an opportunity to play a position and hit until the second half of the year, when I led the team in batting average with .529, but still found myself being taken out of games after getting out once and hitting close to the bottom of the order.  The coach's favorites ended the year hitting close to .290, almost half of my batting average, but continued to start ahead of me and hit at the top of the order.  Then, this fall I tried out for and made an Angels Pro Scout team which has been a great experience so far.  The number one thing I noticed about the team is that they don't care about anything but results and skill or talent, which I appreciated because while they make an effort to play everybody, they reward certain players for their success by inviting them back to the team and playing them more often.  I played in the Perfect Game Underclass National Tournament, and I hit well, and stayed locked into the 3 or 4 hole for the tournament.  I ended up leading the tournament in batting average by hitting .778 and felt confident at the plate with the support of my coaches and teammates.  On my high school team, however, it seems that the coach has obvious favorites, and it seems like he sees my future as a pitcher, and only a pitcher.  I feel like I can help the team win, and I think I deserve a fair chance to compete for a spot in the lineup while playing during the fall and winter seasons, but in the games, all of the coach's favorites get the large chunk of the at bats and field time.  This brings me to my questions:

Should I be concerned that the Varsity baseball coach views me only as a pitcher?

Should I continue to play during the fall and winter with my high school team, or find a travel team once the Angels season ends at the end October?

Is my situation unique, and what can I do about it?

Sorry if I came across as arrogant, but I felt I had to emphasize the fact that I am swinging the bat well to give you background to the situation.

I'm assuming from your post that you are going into your sophomore year.

On the whole I would say not to worry about it too much at this point.  There is the possibility that the coach is well aware of what you can do with the bat, but he also needs to find out what the other players can do.  Usually the goal of freshman and JV programs is to develop players for the varsity level - not necessarily to win games.

Another thing to keep in mind is that defense is going to play a factor as well.  I would think a coach would find a spot for an exceptional hitter, but again he may just be trying to get other guys some playing time.

Regardless, I would say that if you are interested in playing beyond HS, that what you do in the summer and with a travel team will ultimately get you more attention than what you do during your HS season.

Perhaps the best thing to do is to actually discuss the situation with your coach.  All you have to do is ask him what you need to work on so that you can get into the starting lineup as a fielder.

Regardless, just remember to control what you can, and make the most out of whatever opportunity you get.

There's a lot more to freshman and jv ball than stats. Its more about development.  By varsity good players rarely get politicked. Marginal players and parents use it as an excuse. Keep doing what you're doing. You're on the right track. Does the varsity coach let pitchers play positions?
