Son was discribing a couple of faults he has sometimes in his swing. His hips slide foward before starting to open. Second His hips open up slightly before his hands. He is working on it with his hitting coach. My question is. Are there any drills he can be doing without have to be in a batting cage? Drills that will create muscle memory.

Why do you think either of these things is a problem?

This is what high-level hitters (e.g. Albert Pujols) do.

It sounds to me like your son has a good swing and his coach may be trying to fix something that isn't broken.

Exactly what problems is he having?

Not generally considered to be flaws.

1) does the instructor want him to open his hips then shift?

2) does the instructor want his hands and hips to fire simutaneously?

If yes to these questions suggest you promptly post a swing clip here and hold off on any further instruction.

It sounds to me like the instructor may be a believer in linear mechanics (throw the hands at the ball), which have been pretty thoroughly discredited.
