Somebody help me with this one.

Runners on 2d and 3rd, 2 outs. Batter hits a foul pop that should be caught by 1B with ordinary effort. He drops it. Scored an error.

On the next pitch, batter rips a home run, three runs score.

Now, I know that the run are unearned, since the inning should have been over.

But how do you keep the statistics on this batter?

Is it still just one AB with one hit (the homer)?

Does the E reflect at all in his stats, the way it would've if it'd been a fair ball and he'd only reached first?

Midlo Dad,

"6.04 A batter has legally completed his time at bat when he is put out or becomes a runner."

10.02 "The official score report prepared by the official scorer shall be in a form prescribed
by the league and shall include: (a) The following records for each batter and runner:

(1) Number of times batted, except that no time at bat shall be charged when a player
(i) hits a sacrifice bunt or sacrifice fly;
(ii) is awarded first base on four called balls;
(iii) is hit by a pitched ball; or
(iv) is awarded first base because of interference or obstruction; ..."

10.12 "(a) The official scorer shall charge an error against any fielder:
(1) whose misplay (fumble, muff or wild throw) prolongs the time at bat of a batter, ..."

Taken together, these rules show that a batter can have 0 or 1 (and not 2) at-bats per plate appearance. So the error which "prolongs the time at bat" doesn't affect the batter's statistics. And "prolongs" acknowledges that it is still the same time at bat.
