I keep score for our Varsity team. Our lead off hitter with some good wheels hits a slow/medium speed 3 hopper to third base with one out and a runner on second. The 3rd baseman comes in on the grass to field it, fakes a throw to first, draws the runner on second off the bag enough to get him in a run down and eventually out. Would have been a close play at first. It looks to me, based on OBR 10.05b3, that because an out was made, it's a fc for the batter instead of a hit, even if I think he would have beat the throw. Agree?

In this case, even if an out was not made, it would still be scored a FC because the fielder chose to go after an out other than the batter.

Interestingly enough, this is not true.

OBR 10.05(a) The official scorer shall credit a batter with a base hit when:
(6) a fielder unsuccessfully attempts to put out a preceding runner and, in the official scorer’s judgment, the batter-runner would not have been put out at first base by ordinary effort.
