What is the function of the top hand over the bottom hand in hitting? My son played with a badly sprained (hopefully not broken), heavily tapped top hand. Had it been his throwing hand he couldn't have played in the field. He got three hits up the middle and the other way. He said he had a couple of pitches he should have turned on but wasn't quick enough. After Friday's game and a couple of days rest to let the swelling go down he'll get x-rayed.

I'm interested from the aspect of how his injury might affect his hitting, not the science of the top hand versus the bottom hand. I'm wondering if hitting the ball the other way when he felt he should have turned on a couple of pitches is a function of the injury.

most of the good mlb hitters over the years.(again most)mostly because they would slow down their swing with both hands on the bat.broad in the chest type guys.

both my boys were taught hitting by me.then they spent some time with walt hriniak. the broader one released the top hand, the slender one didn't need to. in sumation there comes a point in a swing the top hand isn't needed.

IMHO a weak top hand would lead to bat drag which would lead to the bat not squaring up at contact and could be whats causing the opposite field hitting. It's hard to get the bat head coming around faster than the bat handle just using the bottom hand.

Not trying to start a god awful hitting debate just stating why I think this is happening.
Another dad tapes all my son's ab's. The swing mechanics look ok. My son said his swing felt slower in terms of turning on a couple of pitches down the middle. I didn't see bat drag. He still hit the ball hard three times. It's hard to determine bat speed without putting videos side by side. I guess we'll have a better feel for the situation after another game Friday and even better after a weekend of rest. The swelling went down from the previous day. He wears a removable cast when he's not playing and gets taped heavily when he plays.
