My son will be a freshman this year and hopes to make the High School team. He has always been a consistent line drive hitter but lately he has been hitting mostly grounders or short pop ups. I think the problem is that he has started getting his hips too far ahead of his hands so he loses all his power. I would appreciate any comments on his swing and drills that I could use to get his hips and hands back in sync again.
This hit went for a double down the third base line. It was the only clip that came out clear enough to see.

With respect I must say that this swing needs a ton of work. If you are currently paying a hitting instructer for his services I would suggest you stop.

He is capable of producing a much better hack, and needs more work then what you will probably receive in this forum. Find a good instructer, I know there are a few good ones in this area.

If you do get him to an instructor, what he will probably work on with your son is creating/keeping torque in his setup and swing.

If you notice, as he starts his swing, the angle between the bat and his left forearm widens out to almost 180 degrees (meaning almost a straight line from the end of the bat to his elbow.)

From there, the only way he can create any bat speed at all is to spin his torso, and kind of "sweep" at the ball.

Look at video of good MLB hitters. ALL of them have a very tight angle between their forearm and bat (in some cases, 45 degrees) and that angle is maintained all through the swing as the hips, then shoulders release. The very last thing to release is the bat.

So, your son loses his potential power by giving away, prior to the swing, all the potential energy of the release of the bat.

The bad news is that it will take lot of work on his part to re-learn the swing. The good news is that if he does it, he will do more than just hit the occasional line drive.
Agree that he needs work, particularly in the area of load/unload where he needs to learn proper technique. Somewhat robotic and lacking continuity...any momentum, both weight shift and bat head is lost thus bat speed is compromised.

Gotta believe there are some very fine hitting instructors in Texas that can work with him.

While definitely an unusual swing I see some good things that could be enhanced rather quickly with good instruction....IMO.

I've seen far worse swings.

I don't like what he's doing with his arms but I see what he's doing as within the ball park......it's a large ball park.......it holds quite a lot. lol

I can see the lower body syncing quickly with a better upper body pattern.
