Welcome to the HSBBW mattinglyfan.

I had to do a Google® search for home plate turf halo to know what you were talking about.

My first guess was it is one of the "Big Deal" Dinners on the WAFFLE HOUSE® menu. I checked. It wasn't.

Then I figured it had something to do with the Anaheim club. Wrong.

Then I checked Preachers Without Borders. Nada.

Turns out that it's some type of welcome mat laid out around home plate and often times sporting a team's name or logo or both.

Wow! We're lucky just to have a semi-functioning plate. The pictures I saw of the home plate turf halos were impressive. If you can afford one then I would say go for it!

And remember...everytime you hear a bell ringing that means a high school baseball team has earned itself a home plate turf halo.

We installed one a little over a year ago. I think the total construction cost was roughly $4500. It looks really good and has cut back on maintenance at the home plate area. It is also great from draining. We had to have professionals to lay the concrete. We slanted the concrete towards the backstop and then used some special glue to lay the turf down.
Only negative during the construction process we had was the weather. We needed about 3-4 days without rain for everything to come together and we didnt get that in the early season until after official practice had started. We had to add a lot of sand at the back of the halo, and then we added about 2 tons of infield mix to the homeplate area when completed. It is a great compliment to our field. We purchased the standard 5 feet halo without the wings because we have grass basepaths.
I like the idea of having all of the foul area turfed. That is the area we have the hardest time trying to keep looking good. Areas around the dugout and plate get worn down.

I would like to do our whole infield the way Oregon did, but not sure our school will pay the bill. Especially since they would have to do the softball field if they did ours doubling the cost. Brown turf instead of dirt would be the way to go.
The catchers will cuss the day you put in a halo. We have a horseshoe style that the catchers hate...guess who has to sweep the thing daily and keep it clean. Very hard to sweep and keep looking good. Ours is 3 years old and looks older. Whoever designed the shape of this thing did a really poor job.

We have also had catchers sprain ankles on the stupid thing by catching a cleat in the edge.

JMO.
