Thanks Adam. It clearly hit the top of the fence and bounced back in. There is no obstruction behind the fence for it to have hit.
Under our league rules we could have filed a protest to the game and if the protest was upheld (which I don't see how it would not have been) the game would have had to have been replayed from the 1st inning which is when the improper call was made. We choose not to do this as this was a Championship game and the trophies were handed out at the end to the team.
It wouldn't be too great a feeling to win the next game and tell some 10YOA boy he has to give his trophy back because the umpires don't know the rules. We will just chalk this up to a good education process for the boys that baseball...like life..isn't always fair.
