Had a discussion a while back on another board with an umpire I considered to be fairly knowledgeable, but we disagreed on this.
Ball hit to deep center field. As the ball goes over the fence the center fielder leaps, reaches over the fence, the ball hits his glove, and bounces back onto the field.
We all know that a defensive player can reach into DBT to make a catch, but if he doesn't make the catch, can the ball be deflected back onto the field and remain in play?
I believe that once a ball goes into DBT and, unless it is legally caught, could not reenter the field and be playable. I would call time and awarded the home run.
What are your thoughts?
