I've thought that was a tough question to answer as well. I think its only important in the case you know a scout who has seen your son...and the college happens to know that scout too. You're just sort of connecting the two of them to have a conversation. If you know of one, give the name...they will connect with him after that.

If you don't know of any, just say "unsure" or something like that. To be truthful, except for a handful of very highly regarded prospects that answer is the honest answer for most kids.

I think they're just looking for reliable opinions and if you can give a name that they know...they will use it. Otherwise, its irrelevant.

How do you go about getting that evaluation?

In my son's case, his travel team has a combine/tryout twice a year where MLB scouts and college scouts attend. They have been doing it since he was 15 as both a combine and tryout event. The tryout fee was reasonable to new players to cover the cost of the combine. The players and scouts can track their progress in a realistic combine environment.
We went to two Major league tryouts(free) in the last two weeks and plan on going to another on July 15th. One of the team's scouts told the boys that he would be glad to help if someone needed an honest assessment given to a college. That team did not share times or grades with the guys although truthfully we didn't ask. The other team's scout told the guys that they could ask about their grades and times as they left, so older son was able to find out how he graded on the Major League 20-80 scale for the various tools. These tryouts can be found by looking on the individual Major League team sites and these were all within 2 and a half hours of where we live.
