When I saw that #1 draft choice Dansby Swanson was dealt to Atlanta as part of the Shelby Miller trade I thought it was time to have a Hot Stove League thread. If I'm a Braves fan I like this trade. Swanson should be a star. Could be a superstar. And Inciarte is pretty damn solid. Miller is solid too, but back in the day smart clubs never traded for pitching from the Braves. They never let one go until he was no longer a useful arm.

Hey I like the fact that the Cubs got Zobrist who played for Madden in Tampa- he's mister versatility with some pop as well. Lackey should help the rotation, reuniting with Lester. But the Starlin Castro trade for WHO????? (The player to be named from the Yankees hopefully is very special)
the fact that Swanson is only the 4th top pick to be traded without reaching the MLB club tells you how odd this trade is...I guess time will tell but I have to think AZ wasn't as impressed as they expected to be with Swanson.
We'll see on Swanson. Adrian Gonzalez was one of the four you mention. I think Braves made out well, but they are all prospects. Time will tell.
I love the trade from the Braves standpoint, and the Diamondbacks didn't do too bad getting an excellent #2 to pitch behind Greinke.

just more reading on the subject.

I like picking up Zobrist too but still little bit of a log jam on the infield unless Bryant is going to be moved to OF. I can see that happening with (probably) Baez going to third. The Lackey pick up was a safe one and a good one but not the knock out of the park signing like everyone thought when talk was Price was coming. I got caught up in it too but now that it's not happening I can see where it was good financial move not to get him. The staff is going to be pretty dang good. Ace - Arrieta won't be as good as he was last year but he won't be far off. He's figured out how to pitch. Two - Lester will be fine and if you don't realize he actually had a good season then you don't understand the game. The offense will be much better in 2016 and will score him some runs. Three - Lackey will be a great pick up in this spot if he just gets his career averages. I like him matching up against almost any pitcher because he competes. Four / Five - Hammel / Hendricks will fill these out unless another move is made. I'm thinking Hammel is about done but hope he does well. I truly think Hendricks will be a really good pitcher (a 3 and maybe a 2) in the very near future. He needs more experience at the MLB level. I believe it was his last start against the Cards in regular season but he flat out dominated them except for 3 pitches they hit for homeruns.
I have complete faith in Epstein and Hoyer but I'm afraid the Castro trade may be another Palmeiro trade where he leaves and becomes a super star. I get room needed to be made and the logical side of my brain says it's a good / decent move but I'm afraid he's going to figure it out and be awesome. I have no idea who the guy is that was received for him but Castro didn't help himself with how bad of a season he had in getting a better prospect. I am curious who the PTBNL will be.

Lackey has been one of the best FA signings so far. And I heard the Cubs pitch to him and any other Free Agents..."We haven't won a World Series in over a 100 years. You could be the one to help us win our first since 1908!"

This has nothing to do with Swanson or his potential. Up until this year, MLB teams were not permitted to trade a player they drafted for one full year. Now they can be traded after the World Series ends.

As my son said, "Until they prove otherwise, they're still the Cubs."

How long have the Cubs been using this sales pitch?
A player who liked Ben Zobrist's contract ..... Brock Holt. He has a while before free agency. But a super utility player now has a high dollar value.

True on the rule change but that doesn't mean it has nothing to do with what they see as potential. I am not even saying that I am 100% correct but I am saying that would be my first thought and a legitimate possibility
Interesting take on the trade here - short version, AZ overpaid, unless they are projecting Miller to have much higher value than others do, and Swanson to have lower value, which is hard to understand given his college career and good but short MILB season.

Oh and just to be clear, Swanson seems to me like a great kid. I enjoyed watching him and hope he does well! The deal just doesn't add up in my mind unless there is something missing from the info we have on him...or AZ just screwed up, also possible!! Being a Phillies fan I am going to hate AZ for the next 15 years if that is the case!!
Reviving the Hot Stove Topics with all the recent signings.......
Which brings me to the Detroit Tiger signing of Justin Upton for 6 years/$133M. Can anyone explain this deal to me or is this just a case of his agent completing the deal of the century for this client? From what I read and heard, there wasn't a gaggle of GM's in a bidding war for this guy's services. He's a good to very good player but $133M worth? You've got Victor Martinez and Miguel Cabrera hitting 3 & 4 in the lineup. Where do you put this guy in the lineup? He averages 162 Ks per year, .352 OBP .271 avg. 26 HR and 84 RBIs 16 SBs....possibly 5 or 6 hole? Which begs the question of $133M for a 5 or 6 hole hitter....I'm still trying to figure this one out. Again, I think he is a good player but I think Detroit overpaid by quite a bit.
Not Hot Stove related....what do you think of the Reds inducting Pete Rose into their Hall of Fame? I think it is a great idea and long overdue. Great move for that community honoring someone who was a great baseball player on a great team in the 1970s. One of the best teams of all time IMHO.

I am for it. Pete is one of their own, born in Cincinnati as well.
