(1975) My friend's coach wrote a letter to a big midwest school coach saying what a good player he was. The college coach mailed back a baseball scholarship. The coach never met him, never saw him play. My friend never visited the school, never talked on the phone to the coach. Just mailed the letter back and showed up in September. He figured baseball was baseball.

He'd never heard terms like 'school that fits', 'be happy there without baseball', 'keep up your grades'... He got no advice from anyone.

He was hardcore city, a 'corner kid'. He had a difficult time adjusting to college and life in Kansas. Never played an inning. He came home the first Christmas and didn't go back.

He's in his 50s, now. Great guy. Great friend. Great life. Still a baseball nut. Can still hit a fastball. He just shakes his head and smiles when he talks about Kansas.

"What was I thinking?"
