First year high school coach. I'm new to the area, and I got left a mess. Last year's team finished dead last in the state. We don't have a functioning L screen, most baseballs are old, no real indoor facility to speak of (it was 18 degrees this morning), and the team hadn't done any fundraising in at least the past 3 years, probably much longer. We held a mushball tournament, made around 850ish. Got the signatures from the players that I needed to get 2 L screens and some other training equipment we need. Then the business office tells me that we can't buy equipment with money we raise, and that equipment has to come through the athletic department. The same athletic department that hasn't bought a new L screen in 15+ years. The school has also banned all booster clubs. I'm at a loss. I have no idea what to do. I have been told that since baseball doesn't bring in money, that the athletic department can't spend much on baseball. I get that, but I don't see why we can't buy it ourselves.

What county are you in? Is your Athletic Director open to discussing the rules with you?
I’ve tried. I’m on Navajo Nation. It seems like he isn’t able to help and it all stops at the business office.
If the high school plays under the regulations of the state high school athletic association I suggest getting a copy of fundraising regulations and discuss with the people above you at the school and district.
I would bring up making the team as competitive as possible being good for developing the self esteem of the players.
Add: It’s the Arizona Interscholastic Association
I’ll give that a shot. Thanks!
You're in AZ, I've got to believe with the right contacts you can get some hand me downs from the MLB spring training facilities - certainly an L-Screen. Your situation seems like one they'd jump on supporting.
That's a great idea. Now to find the right contacts. Thanks! I'll start reaching out.
Can you take donated equipment? Would that get around the policy?
Yes we can take donations. I'm trying to contact some teams in the area, but it's pretty rural.
#newtothis:
Are they filming "DARK WINDS" near to you? Robert Redford [The Natual] is a Producer.
Also the Casino may be able to donate. Your team could offer their help.
Bob
Casino is a great idea, there is one nearby in Gallup. I just checked, looks like they are filming further north in Monument Valley but I can still try to ask. Thanks!
