I was always downright superstitious about making sure I'd get MY number back in the day. I think my son is the same way.

Are most players pretty particular about trying to get THEIR number?

Mine always liked 3 or 4 growing up. If they were not available he would add them up and choose 7. In HS he endd up with 1 and now in college is wearing 8. Maybe the next stop will be 9...?
I just conferred with his best friend who confirmed that he is very particular about his number. His best friend was 2 and a catcher so he chose 1 since he was going to pitch!

Little if any importance. When it looked as if my son was serious about signing a NLI the head coach dangled one more carrot and asked my son what number he wanted -- I JUST knew he would respond with one of his favorite numbers but I was surprised when he said: "It doesn't matter". ------- They gave him #10.

* He wore it --- I framed it.

The obvious, unless it's not available Wink. He has worn 27 since the age of 11: on both comp-league teams, the "academy" team, the Steamboat Springs team, and all his AAU basketball teams.

For the HS team last fall, he wore #19, and has #23 for his freshman basketball team. It remains to be seen what number will be available for HS baseball this spring.
My son's baseball number is 17. It comes from Scott Rolen being his favorite player when he was little. Then Rolen got traded and changed to 27. My son kept 17. He's always had it in travel and LL all-stars. Last year on JV was the only time he hasn't had it. The pecking order for uniforms is varsity coaches, varsity players, JV coaches, JV players. The freshmen have the old uniforms. A JV coach got 17 last year. My son didn't care. He took 13. He called himself bad luck for the opponents. He'll get 17 back this year. He joked with the JV coach he'll give it up to him for a Rolex watch (like the MLB'ers).

In my son's first year of t-ball our team was the Mariners. I gave him #5 because John Olerud was #5, and a fellow southpaw. He wore #5 until losing it to seniority ... and John Olerud is still one of his all-time favorite players (autographed picture still on the bedroom wall).

After wearing 2,5,8,10,11,15 & 17 he will wear whatever number they hand him. Given his choice ... he wants to wear 25 (one of my old numbers), 21 (my old HS number), or 44 (his Grandfather's ship # in WWII).

Superstitious ??? ... Heck yes, when the superstitions work for him. Otherwise, they're silly and he sluffs them off. So I guess he's selectively superstitious.
My son's number was 2. He wore it throughout all-stars, travel and American Legion.

In high school, the pecking order was identical to RJM's school with varsity, then JV and freshman had different uniforms. His #2 wasn't available so he ended up with 22.

As an upperclassman, when 2 became available, he didn't take it and stuck with 22. Jokingly, the season after he got 22, one of the underclassmen went for 22 and my son said he told him "don't even think about it"

Anyone on here familiar with Stanford baseball will know that the head coach, forever it seems, has worn #9. He played at Stanford when they were still the "Indians" (football and baseball) and wore #9 then. In fact, his baseball friends in the area and his players all call him "9," not Coach Marquess.

My son also wore and liked the #9 in his youth (12U) baseball days.

On his recruiting visit, we were walking with "9" across campus and the question came up...our son introduced it. "Coach, if I come here there's a number I'd like to have."

Coach: "Sure, what number do you want?"

Son: "9." Eek

I quickly turned to look at my son knowing full well that he was pushing the limits...and noticed a crooked-smile grin on my son's face...he was messin! Big Grin

Without missing a beat....Coach: "Nope, that number is taken...won't happen...Jack McDowell wanted that number, he couldn't have it either...but you can have 19 if you want."

So our son wore #19...just like Jack McDowell...out of that silly conversation...all 4 years. Cool

My son wore 25 for 5 years of travel ball because he liked Andrew Jones (back when he was good). 10 is his second choice - Chipper Jones. He played on a different fall team this year 25 and 10 were taken so he took 1 (Furcal's # when on Braves). His summer team, 25 was taken so he took 10.

High school this year will be a c*** shoot depending what the upperclassmen have taken. I think he would prefer certain #'s, but when it comes down to it, I don't think he cares a whole lot as long as he is playing.

Sons number always seemed to be dictated by his size. He liked 13 because it was his birthday but once he got to his first travel team the biggest uniform was #80 and that was a favorite. Once he got to high school unless he wanted to be a wide reciever 80 wasn't available #23 was my first number an that is what he wore. Even at college his number was dictated mainly by his size and he has worn #43.

He never really got hung up on numbers as long as he got one.
When he was little and in LL, it was always #1 (he loved Ozzie). Then it was 9, because of all the baseball history and associations. So many teams later, if he has a choice 3 or a multiple thereof would be first choice. Superstition.

His first pro uniform, he was given 6 and asked if that was all right. He thought (but obviously would not say) "Musial's number!? Oh yeah that's all right!"
17 for his day of birth. Has been lucky to have it all through high school and before. When he can't get it on travel ball teams and such he tries to get 7 or 27.

Not superstitious, but it has become somewhat of an identity for him. Uses it in his email address "backstop17@" and one of the dads on our team calls him 1-Adam-7 (reminiscent of the Adam-12 series) and when a base stealer is on says jokingly "1-Adam-7, 1-Adam-7 we have a 211 in progress."

Another neat thing is his voice mail on his cell which has nothing to do with his number, but I enjoy it "Hey, its Adam, catch ya later."

For what ever reason son has picked #6 as his preferred number. No rhyme or reason to it. He wears it in baseball and basketball. For Middle School last year #6 was taken by an upperclassman so he took what they gave him #19. This year he'll be the upperclassman and take back his #6..lol.
How can he wear "6" in basketball in school ball? It's an illegal digit. In high school and college the only allowable digits are 0 through 5. It's so the refs can signal fouls with their fingers. It's an old silly rule, but it exists. It's why my son couldn't wear 17 for basketball.

L8 Breaking - welcome to the hsbbweb!

Very clever screen name btw Smile I was always a fan of someone who had that "late breaking" stuff in their arsenal. Is your son a pitcher?
